MINNEAPOLIS ? Miami Heat star guard Dwyane Wade says he will wait until game time to see if his sore left foot will allow him to play against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Wade tested his foot with a thorough workout at the team's shootaround Friday morning. He tried jumping off it and landing on it on several drives to the basket to see if it was ready for the pounding of a game.

Wade says the foot is still a little sore and that he will wait to see how it feels in the evening before deciding whether to play.

For the Timberwolves, veteran guard J.J. Barea will miss the game with a strained right hamstring. Barea hopes to return Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks, his former team.

NKoreans salute, cry for late leader Kim Jong Il (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea's next leader escorted his father's hearse in an elaborate state funeral on a bitter, snowy day Wednesday, bowing somberly and saluting in front of tens of thousands of citizens who wailed and stamped their feet in grief for Kim Jong Il.

Son and successor Kim Jong Un was head mourner on the gray day in Pyongyang, walking with one hand on the black hearse that carried his father's coffin on its roof, his other hand raised in salute, his head somberly bowed against the wind.

At the end of the 2 1/2-hour procession, rifles fired 21 times as Kim Jong Un stood flanked by the top party and military officials who are expected to be his inner circle of advisers. Kim then saluted again as goose-stepping soldiers carrying flags and rifles marched by.

Although analysts say Kim Yong Un is on the path toward cementing his power and all moves in North Korea so far ? from titles giving him power over the ruling party and military and his leading position in the funeral procession ? his age and inexperience leave questions about Kim's long-term prospects. Whereas his father was groomed for power for 20 years before taking over, the younger Kim has had only about two years.

He also faces the huge challenges of running a country that struggles to feed its people even as it pursues a nuclear weapons program that has earned it international sanctions and condemnation.

Kim Jong Il ? who led with absolute rule after his father Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, through a famine that killed hundreds of thousands and the pursuit of nuclear and missile programs ? died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69.

Mourners in parkas lined the streets of Pyongyang, waving, stamping and crying as the convoy bearing his coffin passed. Some struggled to get past police holding back the crowd.

"How can the sky not cry?" a weeping soldier standing in the snow said to state TV. "The people ... are all crying tears of blood."

The dramatic scenes of grief showed how effectively North Korea built a personality cult around Kim Jong Il despite chronic food shortages and decades of economic hardship.

A large challenge for North Korea's propaganda apparatus will be "to counter the public's perception that the new leader is a spoiled child of privilege," said Brian Myers, an expert on North Korean propaganda at Dongseo University in Busan, South Korea.

"Having Kim Jong Un trudge mournfully next to the hearse in terrible weather was a very clever move," Myers said.

Even as North Koreans mourned the loss of the second leader the nation has known, the transition of power to Kim Jong Un was well under way. The young man, who is in late 20s, is already being hailed by state media as the "supreme leader" of the party, state and army.

Kim was somber in a long, dark overcoat as he strode alongside his father's hearse accompanied by top party officials behind him and key military leaders on the other side of the limousine ? a lineup that was a good look at who will be the core leadership in North Korea.

North Korea now turns to Thursday's memorial ceremony. Although there will be tributes to Kim Jong Il, the country will be turning toward Kim Jong Un, analysts said.

"The message will be clear: Kim Jong Un now leads the country and there is no alternative," said Kim Yeon-su, a North Korea expert at the state-run Korea National Defense University in South Korea.

There will also be more attention paid to the inner circle forming around Kim Jong Un.

On Wednesday, he was accompanied by Jang Song Thaek, Kim Jong Il's brother-in-law and a vice chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission, who is expected to be crucial in helping Kim Jong Un take power.

Also escorting the limousine were military chief Ri Yong Ho and People's Armed Forces Minster Kim Yong Chun. Their presence indicates they will be important players as the younger Kim consolidates his leadership. Top Workers' Party officials Choe Thae Bok and Kim Ki Nam and senior military officer Kim Jong Gak also took prominent positions.

The early part of Wednesday's funeral ceremony was shrouded in secrecy, as in 1994, when Kim Il Sung died. Back then, Kim Jong Il and top officials held a private, hourlong ceremony inside the Kumsusan palace before the procession through the city, according to his official biography.

Pyongyang's foreign diplomats were invited to attend the procession, though few other outsiders appeared to be allowed into the country for the funeral. One foreign diplomat in Pyongyang, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of her work, said funereal music played and people wept as the convoy left Kumsusan followed by a large number of vehicles and army jeeps.

After showing taped footage of mourners and documentaries of Kim Jong Il, state TV began airing the procession, showing cars moving slowly through the snowy city, led by a limousine carrying a huge portrait of a smiling Kim Jong Il.

Wednesday's procession had a stronger military presence than 1994.

Kim Jong Il, who ushered in a "military first" era when he took power, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son to the world.

Kim Jong Un was made a four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party last year.

After the funeral, the young Kim is expected to cement his power by formally assuming command of the 1.2 million-strong military, and becoming general secretary of the Workers' Party and chairman of the party's Central Military Commission, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.

Kim Jong Il's two other sons, Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Chol, were not spotted at the procession.

Jefferson's Va. estate highlights slaves' stories

RICHMOND, Va.?? When Thomas Jefferson died, scores of slaves were sold from his Monticello plantation to settle his debts. Peter Fossett, 11, was among them, recalling that he was "born and reared as free, not knowing that I was a slave, then suddenly, at the death of Jefferson, put on an auction block and sold to strangers."

Fossett's story is one of many included in several new projects launching this winter to shed light on the slaves who lived and worked at Monticello.

A website launching Jan. 27 will showcase oral histories of the slaves in an online project called "Getting Word: African American Families of Monticello." An exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. called "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello: Paradox of Liberty" also opens Jan. 27 and will weave in some excerpts from the "Getting Word" project. And an outdoor exhibit, "Landscape of Slavery: Mulberry Row at Monticello," will open Feb. 17 at the Monticello estate in Charlottesville, Va.

"We don't shy away from slavery, we talk about slavery because we know that it's fundamentally important to understanding Jefferson and understanding America," said Susan Stein, a senior curator at Monticello. "In this time period, 20 percent of America's population was enslaved, and 38 percent of Virginia's population in 1790 were slaves."

Expanding the reach of the oral history project is among Monticello's ongoing efforts to give more prominence to the role of slaves as well as indentured servants and others who worked on the 5,000-acre plantation owned by America's third president. Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, and although he owned slaves, he called slavery "an abominable crime."

Because the houses on Mulberry Row were made of wood, little physical evidence remains of what once included more than 20 buildings. About 130 to 140 slaves worked at Monticello in any given year, including those who worked on Mulberry Row, which grew from five buildings in 1770 to as many as 23 buildings in 1790. Jefferson kept meticulous farm books and lists of his human property, including names of the slaves and what jobs they performed.

The Mulberry Row exhibit will feature digital renderings and animations to help visitors better understand plantation life, including smartphone applications that will show what missing buildings looked like, Stein said.

Curators are also building mini-exhibits at key Mulberry Row sites, including one on the plantation's nail-making business that includes related artifacts from that period. Jefferson "had enslaved boys 10 to 16 years old making nails in the nail shop," Stein said, and tens of thousands of nails from the site were sold to neighbors and stores.

Future components of the ongoing Mulberry Row project will include restoration of the estate's mountaintop roads and two remaining original structures, the stable and weaver's cottage. A couple of buildings, including a slave dwelling, also will be reconstructed, Stein said.

After Jefferson died in 1826, all of his property was sold to repay his massive debts. While Jefferson's will freed some slaves, others were auctioned off.

Fossett, the 11-year-old whose story is one of those included in "Getting Word," was the son of Monticello's head blacksmith. His father was freed upon Jefferson's death, but he was sold with his mother and siblings to a Charlottesville-area merchant and farmer, Col. John R. Jones. Fossett knew how to read and had taught others to do so, he recalled decades later in a newspaper article. Fossett's new owner threatened to whip him if he caught him with a book, but he continued to educate himself and others in secret. His family and others finally purchased his freedom 23 years later.

The "Getting Word" project began in 1993, with historian Cinder Stanton finding descendants of the plantation's black families and recording interviews with them about their histories. Since then, Monticello has obtained interviews with 170 descendants, including those of Jefferson and slave Sally Hemings, and traced their families' paths from Monticello to the present. Cinder's work also helped pull stories together from other sources like the newspaper interview with Fossett.

As for Fossett, he ended up operating a prominent Cincinnati catering business with his brother, assisted in the Underground Railroad and ultimately served as a church pastor for more than three decades.

Fossett returned to his childhood home in 1900. "Upon his return," according to a newspaper account, Fossett "frequently insisted that he now awaited the approach of death with extreme satisfaction, having seen all of this life's pleasures that heart might hope for." He died six months later, and more than 1,500 people, both black and white, attended his funeral.

The Mulberry Row project continues efforts to expand Monticello's history beyond a focus on Jefferson's accomplishments and interests. A new permanent exhibit opened last year in the house cellar to allow visitors to enter the place where slaves and other workers crossed paths with Jefferson family members, visitors' servants and others.

"I think it's important to be able to evoke the physical space and learn more about the people" who worked on the plantation, Stein said. "We hope that people will get a more comprehensive understanding about Jefferson, Monticello and how this place functioned."

Restaurant review: California Pizza Kitchen

Since its first branch opened in Beverly Hills in 1985, California Pizza Kitchen has built its reputation on offbeat, extravagant pizza combinations like the California club pizza (first baked with smoked bacon, chicken and mozzarella and then topped with tomatoes and chilled lettuce tossed in mayonnaise (NT$380), and the pear and Gorgonzola (the two main ingredients come alongside mozzarella, caramelized onions and mixed salad, NT$420). The chain?s first Taiwan store is located in the food court of Vieshow Cinema (????) in Xinyi District. The sit-down restaurant opened earlier this month and has been racking up good business so far. On a recent Wednesday evening, we arrived around 7:30pm but had to wait half an hour for a table.

California Pizza Kitchen is also known for a rotating selection of indulgent appetizers. The current roster at the Taipei location includes calorie bombs like pork rib quesadillas (NT$320) and karaage crispy chicken (NT$210), or Japanese-style fried chicken served with a citrus-soy dipping sauce. There are a few healthier options, such as the Greek plate, or hummus and Greek salad served with pizza bread (NT$250).

We ordered smoked salmon deviled eggs (NT$300), which were served with toasted triangles of pita bread. California Pizza Kitchen?s take on the classic American finger food featured yolk mixed with dill paste and stuffed back into hard-boiled egg white halves, topped with smoked salmon, cucumber, tomato and parsley. It tasted much lighter than traditional deviled eggs, which are usually made with dollops of mayo. Despite the slice of salty smoked salmon layered on top of each egg, however, the dish was somewhat bland and could have done with a heavy sprinkling of paprika.

My companion ordered the Milan pizza (NT$420), which is smothered in three types of cheeses (Edam, mozzarella and Parmesan) and topped with spicy and sweet Italian sausage, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onion and fresh herbs. The meat was delicious, but we were surprised by the sweetness of the crust. The pizza?s many toppings disguised its flaky, buttery texture until we got to the edge of each slice. Once we noticed it, however, it became distracting.

My serving of California kung pao spaghetti (NT320) was much more successful. Tossed in red chili paste with plenty of garlic, peanuts and crispy scallions, the pasta was very piquant. Toppings of chicken or shrimp are available for an extra charge.

With its pastry-dough-like taste, California Pizza Kitchen?s crust pairs well with sweet toppings ? and, indeed, there are several dessert pizzas available, including the pearl tapioca milk tea pizza (NT$280). Topped with pearl tapioca, large multi-colored mochi (or glutinous rice) balls and lashings of tea-flavored cream, the dessert pizza looked unappetizing but tasted surprisingly good. Strawberry slices added an unexpected pop of tartness and the crispy dough was a good textural complement to all the chewy toppings. The pearl tapioca milk tea pizza is best shared between at least two people. Other sweet options include the red wine apple cinnamon pizza (NT$250) and the banana chocolate and marshmallow pizza (NT$250), which appeared to be a popular choice among other diners.

Sunshine helps prevent skin cancer while sunscreens promote it

(NaturalNews) There are three types of skin cancer - of which melanoma is the most dangerous and potentially lethal because it can metastasize into other body parts. The other two non-melanoma types, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, are treatable and not as threatening or able to metastasize as melanoma.

Most skin cancer cases are of the basal cell carcinoma type, which can destroy surrounding tissue and disfigure facial skin areas if unchecked. It is advisable to check with a dermatologist if you have any unusual new moles or sores that won't heal anywhere on your skin. Skin biopsies are easy to perform.

Mainstream medicine blames the sun for all three types, and recommends sun screen lotions to block sun exposure. But one should take their sloppy science of prevention with several grains of salt.

Just about any dermatologist still holds to the myth that you need to avoid direct sunlight or lather your body with sunscreen to avoid skin cancer. Recently, the opposite has been determined to be true in both cases.

There are two basic types of ultra-violet (UV) rays from the sun that affect us: UVA and UVB. Ultra-violet A (UVA) rays have little or no benefit, and can cause some skin damage that initially shows as sunburn and eventually dries and ages the skin. UVA rays are steady throughout the day. Most sunscreens do not block harmful UVA rays. But most of them contain toxic and carcinogenic ingredients.

Natural lotions and many European sunscreens are more beneficial and less toxic. This requires some serious label reading. Simply using coconut oil, sunflower oil, jojoba (hoHOba) oil, eucalyptus oil, or shea butter is easier for preventing sun burn if you're concerned.

Glass windows and windshields do not filter out UVA rays. But they do manage to block UVB rays. UVB rays are involved with the beginning of a body's vitamin D3 production. And UVB rays peak during mid-day and are strongest during summers and nearer the equator. They are not the same throughout the day as UVA rays are.

So the sloppy science says you must deprive yourself of sun bestowing vitamin D3 that helps to prevent cancer and boost the immune system while slathering your body with carcinogenic sunscreens that don't even block UVA rays. Makes no sense, does it?

Actually, those two medical suggestions have probably caused more skin cancer. Over the past few decades, skin cancer cases, especially melanoma, have risen dramatically. And it was a few decades ago that the sun-skin cancer links were made. This made selling sun screen lotions easy with no research on their harmful ingredients or inability to deflect UVA rays. That's not unusual for FDA approvals.

It's wise to pull out of the sun if your fair skin gets pink to avoid sunburn. As you tan, your sun exposure endurance increases. And don't worry about vitamin D3 toxicity from sunlight. It's almost impossible. As your D3 blood level increases, the body simply produces less regardless of the sun exposure time (http://www.naturalnews.com/031577_v...).

There are many overly tanned skinned retirees (who golf often and play lots of tennis), who can attest to their sun soaked boundless energy and good health.

Many consider 8,000 to 10,000 iu (international unit) dosages safe for almost everyone, though it's wise to test D3 blood serum levels. Sometimes more is used under short term dire conditions, up to 50,000 ius, without toxicity.

Kim Jong Il's heir meets with SKorean delegation (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea's next leader burnished his diplomatic skills, solemnly welcoming a private South Korean mourning delegation and offering his thanks, as state media called Kim Jong Un a "sagacious" leader and revealed a new title that gives him authority over political matters.

Kim has rapidly gained prominence since the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, on Dec. 17, and his brief meeting with a group led by a former South Korean first lady and a prominent business leader shows Seoul that he is assured in his new role.

State media have showered Kim with new titles. On Monday, the main Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ? a post that appears to make him the top official in the ruling party. That came two days after the North referred to him as "supreme leader" of the 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him.

Late Monday, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency also called Kim a "sagacious leader" and "dear" comrade while reporting that he again paid respects to his father, whose body is lying in state at Kumsusan Memorial Palace. State media have already dubbed him as a "great successor" and an "outstanding leader."

KCNA also indicated that Kim will uphold his father's trademark "military-first" policy.

"As dear comrade Kim Jong Un, who is a sagacious leader of our party, state and military, is at the forefront of our revolutionary cause, the history of our father and general's glorious military-first revolution will continue," it said.

Also on Monday, Kim met a private delegation of South Koreans and gave them his thanks after they expressed condolences and sympathy over his father's death.

The lead delegates were the widow of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who engineered a "sunshine" engagement policy with the North and held a landmark summit with Kim Jong Il in 2000, and Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North. North Korea sent delegations to Seoul when the women's husbands died.

They stood in a line on a red carpet and bowed silently during their visit to the Kumsusan palace, where Kim Jong Il's bier is surrounded by flowers and flanked by an honor guard, footage from AP Television News in Pyongyang showed. Kim Jong Un and the two women later exchanged handshakes and clasped their hands when they had brief conversations, the footage showed. Their conversations were inaudible.

Through the meeting, Kim appeared to have sent a message pushing South Korea to pursue previously agreed upon cooperative projects that would give his country much-needed hard currency, said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul-based University of North Korean Studies.

Monday's meeting appeared to be Kim's first meeting with South Koreans since his father's death. It was also the fourth time the North's media reported that Kim had visited the memorial palace since his father's death, according to Seoul's Unification Ministry.

On Tuesday, the two lead South Korean delegates met Kim Yong Nam, president of Presidium of North Korea's parliament, who often represents the country and is considered a nominal head of state, according to the APTN footage. The delegates were to return to South Korea later Tuesday.

The Kim family has extended its control over the country of 24 million people to a third generation with Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor.

Kim Jong Il, who ruled North Korea for 17 years, wielded power as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defense Commission. His father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong Un was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party last year, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

Monday's reference to his new title was in a commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Workers' Party, urging soldiers to dedicate their lives "to protect the party's Central Committee headed by respected Comrade Kim Jong Un." Rodong Sinmun has also called on the people to become "eternal revolutionary comrades" with Kim, "the sun of the 21st century."

The language echoed slogans used for years to rally support for Kim Jong Il, and made clear that the son is quickly moving toward leadership of the Workers' Party, one of the country's highest positions, in addition to the military.

North Korea refers to Kim Il Sung as the "sun" of the nation, and his birthday is celebrated as the "Day of the Sun." State media have sought to emphasize Kim Jong Un's role in carrying out the Kim family legacy throughout his succession movement.

His titles are slight variations of those held by his father, but appear to carry the same weight. It was unclear whether the nation's constitution had been changed to reflect the transfer of leadership as when Kim Jong Il took power after his father's death.

Mourning continued, meanwhile, despite frigid winter weather, in the final days before Kim Jong Il's funeral, which is set to take place Wednesday, and a memorial Thursday.

People continued lining up Monday in central Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il Sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong Il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funeral flowers. Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from beverage kiosks.

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A house severely damaged in a Christmas morning fire that killed three children and two grandparents, one of whom worked as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, has been torn down.

The building department determined that the $1.7 million house was unsafe and ordered it razed, Stamford fire chief Antonio Conte said.

The home's owner, advertising executive Madonna Badger, and her male acquaintance escaped from the fire. But Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? and her parents, who were visiting for the holiday, died, police said.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday and rushed outside to help, but could do nothing as flames devoured the large, turreted home.

Police said the male acquaintance who escaped the blaze with Badger was a contractor working on the home. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

Interviews with them will be finished Monday, Conte said. He had no details on the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Saks Fifth Avenue confirmed in a statement that Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, had worked as a Santa this year at its flagship store in Manhattan.

"Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford, offered his condolences to Badger and her family in a statement and said her loss "defies explanation."

The fire was Stamford's deadliest since a 1987 blaze that also killed five people, Conte said.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening. Her whereabouts Monday was unknown.

Property records show Badger bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house is situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

Knowing we can retrieve facts online later alters memory

Four years ago Columbia University psychologist Betsy Sparrow turned to her husband after looking up some movie trivia online and asked, ?What did we do before the Internet?? Thus, Sparrow set out to investigate how Google, and all the information it proffers, has changed how people think. Four psychology experiments later Sparrow has her answer, which was published in Science this past August. ?[The Web] is an external memory storage space, and we make it responsible for remembering things,? she says.

In one of Sparrow?s experiments she presented two groups of undergraduates with trivia statements. Individuals in one group, who were told they could retrieve the information later on their computer, had worse recall than subjects in the other group, who knew in advance they could not do so. Together with the rest of her results, this finding suggests that Internet users have learned to remember how to find a fact rather than the fact itself.

Does this mean the Web is dumbing us down? Certainly not, she says: ?Memory is much greater than memorizing.? Our brain may simply be adapting to present circum?stances, Sparrow points out. ?We?re in an Internet world.?

Army Specialist back home in E. Texas for the holidays

HENDERSON, TX (KLTV)-

An East Texas soldier is home from Iraq after a year-long tour.

Army Specialist Dedrick Walker was a part of the last groups of US troops to deploy for Iraq back in October 2010.

He's also a part of the last groups to come home from Iraq for good.

Walker says it is good to be home this Christmas--and many more to come.

Military roots run deep in the walker family.

It's evident Bishop L.J. Guillory, Dedrick's father, is proud.

The latest edition to the long line of servicemen is his 23-year-old son, Army Specialist Dedrick Walker.

Dedrick is home for Christmas. Home now, for good.

"He is the biggest present that we have for Christmas," says Guillory, "And his brother and I are just happy, just elated to have him here."

Dedrick's father and dozens of others welcomed him home Sunday, after he served a year in Iraq.

Dedrick served as a Preventive Medicine Specialist, helping make the drinking water and living conditions safe for our troops.

He says he helped the Iraqis develop a better quality of life.

His work in Iraq earned him a bronze star.

Dedrick explains that he inspected Iraqi compounds, taught classes, and gave tips to the locals.

Last Christmas morning he was serving overseas. Dedrick says it was then he missed some of the little things, "Just this house, you know, I really missed it. So, I'm not looking for any gifts or anything like that. It's just being around the people I love."

Guillory says, "He is my present from God. My son and I, he is our present from God. That's the biggest present that God could have given me. Santa Claus, St. Nick, all those guys they just don't know. This is the best Christmas I've ever had.

Specialist Walker will attend SFA in the fall, where he will study psychology.

He says he wants to help soldiers cope with mental health issues.

Recently I read a post by Chuck Frey where he highlighted nine information maps for managers and I was struck how mapping uniquely helps teams be more agile. But, before I get into that, for those who haven?t been introduced to the concept ? what do I mean by being more agile?

Agile is typically software development term, but the method is increasingly being applied across business functions. Here?s a pretty good excerpt from CIO Magazine breaks it down.

Agile programming breaks down an application development project into small modularized pieces. Each piece, addressed one at a time in a very short time frame, adds to the application and represents a complete part of the functionality.

Each piece is an iteration that lasts from one to four weeks. As a result, you know immediately when a particular piece of an application proves troublesome. That lets you work through the issue immediately.

Each iteration is like a mini-project by itself.

Here?s how Agile practices work outside of engineering. For example, you have a marketing outreach campaign that runs for 13 weeks and incorporates several executions that include email, banner ads and direct response. By building a map you can then use it as a dynamic road map- providing strategy, an outline of your tactics, for note taking and then as report on the campaign?s success.? For each ensuing week you can iterate and improve upon your campaign with the knowledge that you?ve acquired along the way.

With Agile business practices you can affect change much earlier so your results are optimized. Beyond marketing and development, Agile can lend itself to strategic planning, HR and talent management, business development and sales management.

After reading Chuck?s post it?s clear that information maps are the perfect complement to the Agile process.? Why?

1. They assist in planning to help teams collectively decide what they can do and what?s necessary to achieve the immediate goal.
2. Maps can be leveraged as a team dashboard. They provide a visual recording of the plan, discussion and direction. Team members can track status, keep notes and quickly move from high level goals and/or drill down into minute details as required.
3. They are a real-time resource that provides a snapshot for team members to review, learn and improve.
4. Team members can leverage online maps to share progress, information and files regardless of location.
5. Maps are dynamic.? As such they can be easily updated to incorporate the latest thinking, success metric or resolution.

Wisconsin Would Rather Let You Get Breast Cancer Than Go To ...

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who was elected with the help of extreme anti-choice groups who not only advocate against abortion, but also against contraceptive use, has made it a key priority to roll back initiatives in the state that assist with providing more accesses, resources and education when it comes to reproductive health in the state.? He?s limited teen access to the birth control pill, attempted to clamp down on age appropriate fact based sex ed, and even removed low income men from being to able to access STI screenings through BadgerCare.

Now, he?s continuing his mission to elminiate as much funding as possible from the state?s Planned Parenthood facilities, in this case by denying the group $130,000 in federal funding usually used to provide cancer screenings through the state?s ?Well Woman? program. Walker has deemed that money should instead go to ?less controversial? entities.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin states, ?In what appears to be yet another politically motivated effort to end health care services coordinated by Planned Parenthood, Department of Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith, a Governor Walker appointee, indicated that he is ending the state?s 16 year partnership with Planned Parenthood to facilitate breast and cervical cancer screenings as a part of the Wisconsin Well-Women program in Winnebago, Outagamie, Sheboygan and Fond du Lac counties. This sudden and unexpected decision was communicated in a phone call to staff earlier this month with no further explanation or written notice to help direct existing patients. Because no replacement staffing or health services plan has been communicated to Planned Parenthood or any of the public health providers in the four affected counties, up to 1,000 women in the Fox Valley are likely to lose access to lifesaving cervical and breast cancer screenings, referrals and treatment starting January 1, 2012.?

Anti-choice activists both in the state and nationally are applauding Walker for his decision.? ?On behalf of the members and supporters of Wisconsin Right to Life, I want to extend our thanks to Governor Walker and Secretary Smith for making sure that this vital health care will be provided by local entities that are not engaged in the destruction of unborn human life and the endangerment of women,? said Susan Armacost, Wisconsin Right to Life Legislative Director.? ?These important services will continue to be provided to low income women by other providers throughout Wisconsin.?

It?s repeated by everyone ? ?other providers? will be taking over the service instead.? But who are these ?other providers? that they refer to?? The state?s DHS Secretary doesn?t really have any idea yet.? ?We are committed to making sure these vital prevention services are provided to women in these counties and will work with local community providers to ensure continued access,? Smith has said in response to the accusations that women are being cut off with no alternative sources.

No list of alternative providers can be seen in the state?s Well Woman site, and Planned Parenthood is still listed as the contact for coordianting a screening in a variety of counties.

Maybe they haven?t updated their info yet?? Oh, well, no rush. After all, it?s just cancer.

Ke$ha Wanted 'Sleazy' Remix To Be 'Gangster'

Ke$ha snagged four of the biggest rappers in the game for the latest remix of her Cannibal track "Sleazy." After getting Andre 3000 on a 1.0 remix, Ke$ha and producer Dr. Luke upped the ante for "Sleazy Remix 2.0 Get Sleazier" by adding Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and T.I. to the mix.

"These were all kind of on my wish list of people to work with in the future," she told MTV News on Friday (December 16) about the remix, which was released earlier this week. "Dr. Luke and I had this idea that we wanted to just get them all on one track and make it as gangster of a track as we possibly could. It was kind of a little bit of a mission, and the fact that we pulled it off just in time for Christmas — I'm stoked about it."

Ke$ha said it was "totally a process" trying to get some of the busiest guys in the music industry to make time for the song.

"When I first got Andre 3000 on it, that was a dream come true ... then it was Lil Wayne. Then it was Wiz Khalifa. And each one of them it was like a victory," she said. Weezy was working in the same studio as the pop star, so she "bum-rushed" him to talk about the remix. "We got to talking, and he asked me what my sign was and we realized we could make some sick music together."

Once T.I. was onboard, Ke$ha knew it was time for them to put it out."Finally it was like, 'OK, that's pretty f---ing gangster ... mission accomplished.' "

And Ke$ha says she couldn't be happier with the finished product. "You can really tell they put their best into their lyrics. I'm really proud of the remix 'cause I feel like everyone is really f---ing going for it," she said. "All of their verses are really incredible."

Congress puts spy world on money diet (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress is putting the spy world on a diet by trimming back planned growth in staff and high-tech surveillance programs.

Next year's budget stays roughly the same as this year, at just under $80 billion, and the bill doesn't cancel any programs.

But the bill passed Friday nixes many planned new hires and denies extra funding requested to expand some existing big-ticket items like multibillion-dollar spy satellites. Congress left alone plans for more staff for cybersecurity and tracking terrorist finances.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss classified matters.

One change in the new measure: Families of intelligence officers will get the same financial help for burial expenses as those of uniformed military, if officers are killed by terrorists.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Ah, Paris. City of Light. Land of romance. Gobbler of all the best Golden Globe nominations.

Presented by overseas reporters based in Hollywood, the Globes may be a worldwide affair, but this time, they have a real French flair. The silent film "The Artist," from French filmmaker Michel Havanavicius, led with six nominations Thursday, while the field includes Woody Allen's French romance "Midnight in Paris" and Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo."

Steven Spielberg has two nominees with French connections: the World War I epic "War Horse," set partly in France's countryside, and the animated tale "The Adventures of Tintin," based on comic-book stories created in France's neighbor, Belgium.

"Of course, the foreign press is going to like France," joked Seth Rogen, producer and co-star of the cancer tale "50/50," which has two nominations and no obvious French links.

"War Horse" and "Hugo" are up for best drama, along with two George Clooney films, the Hawaiian family story "The Descendants" and the political thriller "The Ides of March"; the 1960s racial saga "The Help"; and Brad Pitt's baseball tale "Moneyball."

"The Artist," ''50/50" and "Midnight in Paris" are competing for the Globes' other best-picture prize ? for a musical or comedy. Also nominated are Kristen Wiig's wedding romp, "Bridesmaids," and Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe tale, "My Week with Marilyn."

The Globes help narrow down prospects for the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24. If "The Artist" earns a best-picture nomination then, it will be the first silent movie with a serious shot at Hollywood's top prize since the first year of the Oscars, for 1927-28, when the silent flicks "Wings" and "Sunset" took top honors.

"It's really strange and rare to not hear anything in the theater," said "The Artist" star Jean Dujardin, a dramatic actor nominee for his role as a silent-era superstar whose career capsizes after talking pictures take over in the late 1920s. "It's a new visual and emotional experience for people."

Frenchman Dujardin won the best-actor prize at May's Cannes Film Festival in southern France, where "The Artist" premiered.

Though it has virtually no spoken dialogue, "The Artist" is anything but quiet. The film features clever sound effects and a gorgeous musical score that earned a Globe nomination for French composer Ludovic Bource.

Hazanavicius received directing and screenplay nominations for "The Artist," which also picked up a supporting-actress honor for his wife, Berenice Bejo, who plays a rising star of the sound era.

While the key talent on "The Artist" is French, the film was shot in Hollywood and offers a classy re-creation of the world's film capital in the 1920s and '30s. The supporting cast includes John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller and Missi Pyle.

The French connection this year comes heavily from U.S. filmmakers telling stories set in France. Scorsese earned a directing nomination for "Hugo," about an orphan boy living in a Paris train station, where he becomes caught up in a mystery surrounding French film trailblazer Georges Melies. Allen also made the directing cut for "Midnight in Paris," his first film shot entirely in France, the romantic fantasy following an American writer (Owen Wilson) whose nostalgia for the 1920s Paris of Hemingway and Fitzgerald leads him on time-bending adventures.

With a cast that includes French actresses Marion Cotillard and Lea Seydoux and France's first lady, Carla Bruni, "Midnight in Paris" became Allen's biggest hit in decades.

Scorsese also turned nostalgic, crafting a dazzling 3-D Paris of the 1930s and recreating memorable moments from Melies' fantastical silent-film shorts, including "A Trip to the Moon."

"It gave me a chance to work in 3-D, which I've wanted to do since I was young; it allowed me to make a child's adventure, the type of picture that I loved when I was young; and it provided an occasion to pay tribute to one of the cinema's greatest pioneers, Georges Melies," Scorsese said.

Spielberg's "War Horse" follows a resilient steed changing hands among the British, Germans and French during World War I, and his "Adventures of Tintin" chronicles the treasure-seeking exploits of Belgian artist and writer Herge's comic-book hero.

To stretch the Franco angle further, Hollywood exile Roman Polanski, who lives in France after fleeing the United States amid charges he had sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, shot his Globe-nominated drama "Carnage" outside of Paris. The film, based on a stage work by French playwright Yasmina Reza, earned musical or comedy actress nominations for Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet as mothers squabbling over their sons' schoolyard fight.

"The Help" and "The Descendants," which tied for second-place behind "The Artist" with five Globe nominations each, are pure American stories.

Adapted from Kathryn Stockett's best-seller, "The Help" earned a dramatic actress honor for Viola Davis and a supporting-actress nomination for Octavia Spencer as Mississippi maids going public with stories about their white employers as the civil-rights movement heats up in the 1960s.

"I'm thrilled for Viola," Spencer said. "I consider myself a rank-and-file actor who's been kicking the can around for 15 years. Viola is a trained Julliard actress who has been doing stage, and now the world is getting to see what she can do."

Co-star Jessica Chastain also had a supporting-actress nomination as Spencer's good-hearted, lonely boss.

"The Descendants" earned a dramatic actor nomination for Clooney as a father struggling to tend his daughters after a boating accident puts his wife in a coma. Shailene Woodley earned a supporting-actress honor as Clooney's troublesome older daughter, while filmmaker Alexander Payne had directing and screenplay nominations.

Multi-tasker Clooney has three nominations. He's also up for directing and screenplay for "The Ides of March." For the acting prize, Clooney will compete against his "Ides" co-star Ryan Gosling, who plays a presidential candidate's aide. Gosling had a second nomination for best musical or comedy actor as a ladies man in the romance "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Glenn Close also is a dual contender, for best dramatic actress as a woman masquerading as a male butler in the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs" and for best song for writing the lyrics to "Lay Your Head Down," the film's theme tune.

"What an astounding embarrassment of riches," Close said.

Joining Close and Davis in the dramatic actress lineup are: Rooney Mara as a traumatized victim-turned-avenger in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"; Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady"; and Tilda Swinton as a grieving woman coping with her son's terrible deeds in "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

Clooney has another pal in the dramatic actor race, his "Ocean's Eleven" franchise co-star Pitt, who's nominated for his "Moneyball" role as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane.

Gosling, Clooney and Pitt are up against Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar" and Michael Fassbender as a sex addict in "Shame."

Pitt's romantic partner, Angelina Jolie, picked up a nomination for foreign-language film for her directing debut, the Bosnian war drama "In the Land of Blood and Honey."

With drinks and dinner, the Globes are a laid-back affair for Hollywood's elite compared to the Oscars. The show turned a bit prickly last year as host Ricky Gervais repeatedly made sharp wisecracks about stars and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 overseas reporters that presents the Globes.

But Gervais helped give the show a TV ratings boost, and he's been invited back as host for a third-straight year.

"The Artist" star Dujardin joked that Gervais must follow the silent-film code if he plans on mocking him, saying "he has to do it silent, without any words."
