Grockit steps beyond test prep: Learnist brings social learning to iPhone and iPad

Grockit has made a name for itself when it comes to social learning for online test preparation, but with Learnist the company is looking beyond just helping you with the SATs: Now you can learn almost anything with lessons prepared by teachers and experts using online media.

After launching Learnist on the web back in May for beta testers, today Grockit is releasing free Learnist iPhone and iPad apps, which will make the social learning service just about anywhere.

?I?ve been thinking in the past twelve months or so that everything you wanted to learn is online now,? Grockit founder and chief product officer Farbood Nivi told VentureBeat in an interview last week. ?The problem now is how do you make sense of the endless amount of video content online.?

He?s aiming to solve that problem with Learnist, which at first glance looks a lot like like a Pinterest for online learning. The Learnist website shares Pinterest?s square image board design, but instead of a collection of your favorite LOLcats, you?re presented with an array of lessons across topics like technology, food & drinks, and education. About 50 percent of the site?s content is education (including all of Grockit?s test prep curriculum), while the other half consists of more informal how-to guides.

?Almost every single one of our boards is better and more engaging than any textbook out there,? Nivi said. While textbooks can only devote a few pages to a particular lesson, Learnist lessons have no page limit, and they can include just about any piece of media floating around the web.

Learnist is fun to explore on the web, but it?s even more engrossing on the iPad and iPhone. Much like Wikipedia, it?s easier to sit back, relax, and fall down a rabbit hole of lessons. In addition to just viewing lessons, the apps let you build your own and share lessons with others.

Nivi says Learnist is solving five problems around social learning: It?s curating content, so it?s far easier to find lessons than just searching on Google; since most lessons are created by experts and teachers, they know how to sequence content to make learning easier; it lets you create a learning map, which helps to coordinate exactly how you approach a topic; it offers assessments, to make sure you truly understand the material; and finally, the site lets you social around any piece of information.

Since launching in May, Learnist has around 1,000 people who can create content, and they?ve added more than 20,000 different learning objects to the site. Nivi says a ?small army? of teachers also created learning boards for all 7th to 12th grade core subjects. It?ll be interesting to see if teachers actually start recommending Learnist to their students for studying (and perhaps even having students create lesson boards of their own).

?Learnist is so much more the vision I had for social learning than test prep was,? Nivi said. ?When we started [Grockit], it wasn?t possible to do Learnist ? the tech wasn?t there, the content, computing power, net speed ? none of those things were there. It?s only been in the past year that we?ve seen more [of those capabilities].?

San Francisco-based Grockit has raised around $25 million in funding so far from Atlas Venture, Benchmark Capital, Integral Capital Partners, and others.

Scientist at Work: Traveling to Tropical Utah

Randall Irmis, curator of paleontology at the Natural History Museum of Utah and an assistant professor at the University of Utah, is investigating the rise of dinosaurs in southeastern Utah.

Two hundred million years ago the ancient life we are hoping to discover in the rocks of southeastern Utah did not reside in the high arid desert climate found in the Colorado Plateau of today. Rather, the Triassic American Southwest was crisscrossed by rivers, streams and floodplains similar in size to today?s Mississippi River and its tributaries.

The rocks in which we are searching, called the Chinle Formation, comprise the sediments laid down by this ancient river system.

The formation?s multicolored candy-striped beds are famous not only for their early dinosaur fossils, but also because they preserve large logs of colorful petrified wood, remains of giant conifer trees that dotted the landscape 220 to 210 million years ago.

These remains are best preserved in places like the Painted Desert of Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona. The fossil trees, other leaf remains and the sediments themselves help paleontologists understand what the environment was like millions of years ago, and how it has changed through time.

The plants, trees and animals from these ancient ecosystems are well known for Arizona and New Mexico, but poorly understood from rocks in Utah. One of the major questions our team hopes to answer is whether the environment, plants and animals in southern Utah might have been different from those preserved in the Chinle Formation rocks farther south.

We have reason to think this might be the case. During the Triassic Period, most of the continents we know today were assembled together in a single supercontinent called Pangaea. An ambitious early dinosaur could have conceivably walked from Argentina to Canada if it had the time.

Within this giant continent, what is now North America was much closer to the Equator; specifically, the American Southwest was in the tropics, between 5 and 15 degrees north latitude, rather than in its present position of 30 to 40 degrees north. This had distinct effects on climate, which affected the organisms in these ancient ecosystems.

Based on detailed new information from rocks of similar age of eastern North America, we know that the Triassic climate at the Equator was hot and humid, but as you traveled north of 5 degrees, conditions became progressively warmer and drier, with a more seasonal climate.

This greatly affected the animals living in these ecosystems, with different types of herbivores living at different latitudes, despite the fact that there were no great physical barriers to prevent them from mixing.

Our team is hoping to discover whether the Chinle Formation of southern Utah was drier and more seasonal than that of Arizona, and if so, how that affected the types of plants and animals living there. The only way to find this out is to put our eyes and feet to the rocks, and look for clues to the ancient life and climate of Utah 210 million years ago.

This research is supported by a grant from the National Geographic Society?s Committee for Research and Exploration, and is conducted with research permits from the Bureau of Land Management.

Good News For VA Loan Benefits - Harris Kelly 67's blog

President Obama signed The Honoring America?s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act (H.R. 1627) on August 6, 2012. This act, intended to help those sickened by water at Camp Lejeune, includes improvements to VA home loan benefits available through the VA Home Loan Guaranty Program.

A portion of the new law makes VA loans available to more surviving spouses, provides easier funding fee waivers for disabled vets and helps single and dual-duty parents with occupancy hurdles.? Additionally, and at long last, VA loan limits of $1 million are again possible in high-cost areas. Here is a summary of the changes to VA home loan benefits now in effect:

More VA Loan Eligibility for Military Widows

Before the Bill, military widows became eligible for VA loans only they survived a spouse who died while serving or from a service-connected disability.? Now, a surviving spouse may be eligible for VA loans if the veteran had been rated totally disabled for a period of time specified under the new law, and eligible for VA disability compensation at the time of death.

?Dependents Allowed to Fulfill Occupancy Rule

VA loans are intended to finance veterans? homes as primary residences. Borrowers must meet VA owner-occupancy rules to qualify for the federally-backed mortgage program. Sometimes, single parents and dual-active couples could not meet this requirement.? Under the new law, a dependent of active duty member(s) can live in the home financed with a VA loan in place of the ?owner occupant? as long as a dependant?s legal guardian or attorney-in-fact certifies intent.

ARMs and Hybrid ARMs Still VA Loan Offering

Adjustable Rate Mortgages or ARMs can be a great way for borrowers to get an interest rate below the national average for a short time.? Homeowners who plan to move within three years are particularly attracted to ARMs.? This can include military members who often get relocated.? VA ARMs and Hybrid ARMs were about to expire at the end of 2012 due to old legislation.? But, as a result of the latest omnibus bill to improve veterans benefits, ARMs and Hybrid ARMs have become a permanent part of the VA home loan program. Qualified VA borrowers can continue to get these loans from VA-approved lenders that offer them.

Funding Fee Waivers Awarded with Pre-Discharge Disability Rating?

The VA funding fee is required for most VA loans. However, certain borrowers such as disabled vets and surviving spouses can receive fee waivers after receiving proper documentation from the VA.? The new law makes it easier for disabled veterans to now use qualifying pre-discharge disability ratings or memorandum ratings to get VA funding fee waivers. This can eliminate the need for certain veterans to apply for funding fee refunds because they don?t have proper waiver documentation at the time of loan closing.

$1 Million VA Loan Limits ? They?re Back! ??

The Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2008 signed by President Bush raised VA loan limits allowed for up to $1 million dollar VA-backed mortgages in some expensive housing markets.? Because Congress never approved the bill to extend the higher limits for 2012, the VA had to recalculate its loan limits.? As a result, a $625,500 loan was the most the VA would guarantee in neighborhoods within the 48 states ? including high-cost military towns like Prince William, Virginia or Aspen, Colorado. The H.R. 1627 law brings the higher limits back, up to over $1 million in the priciest areas, through 2014.

Why choose Business Class over Economy Air Travel? | The Dakota ...

In many cases, business class fares are regularly purchased by frequent flyers or those embarking on a business trip. If you?re like me, you?ve always been questioning whether or not travelling in business class is worth the extra money? After recently reviewing the business class fares of some of the best airlines in the world, I?ve compiled a breakdown of the benefits and services that business class passengers will receive, in the hopes of making it a little easier for all you travellers out there.

Business Class for Business Travel

As the name suggests, business class air travel was designed with the needs of corporate flyers in mind. Flying in business class allows passengers to have access to a satellite phone, charging ports and, in some cases, the internet; often allowing for the flow of work to continue. When flying in business class, you should always expect some sort of bed, which in most cases is a fully reclining bed that lays flat when in use. For corporate flyers, the options of being fully rested can be the difference between making a good impression and failing miserably at your international meeting.

Inclusions when Flying Business Class

While there are some great perks for corporate flyers, holidaymakers can also reap the benefits of business class travel, particularly when embarking on lengthy journeys. A few major airlines, for instance, offer a pick up and drop off service, to and from the airport, for business class travellers. Along with the unbeatable service, passengers will also receive high quality on-board food and beverage choices, throughout the duration of their flight.

Is it really worth it?

The question on most peoples mind is often whether or not flying business class is a justifiable expense. When comparing with economy air travel, it is easy to see the value in business class airfares. While there may be a slight price increase when choosing business class, many passengers see the expenses as worthwhile, particularly when embarking on a long distance journey. For flights more than 6 hours, for instance, many regular flyers agree that the money spent is well worth the extra leg room, various inclusions and spacious seating.
Business travellers and vacationers will appreciate different aspects of business class travel, with many companies deeming it a necessary part of travel, in order to maintain contact and continued work, for corporate team members. When flying domestically, most holiday makers cannot justify the increased price of business class fares. If you?re travelling internationally (or on-board a long haul domestic flight) however, most passengers agree that business class is the way to fly.

If you?re contemplating business class travel, always check the specifications of your chosen airline. While most major airlines offer very similar services, some features may vary slightly, so it?s always a smart to know what you?re paying for.

Release date moved up for Navy SEAL book

NEW YORK (AP) ? The publication of a former Navy SEAL's first-hand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden has been moved up a week, to Sept. 4.

Mark Owen's "No Easy Day," already a top seller on Amazon.com, was scheduled to come out Sept. 11. Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), announced Tuesday that the release date was changed in response to "overwhelming excitement" from the public. The first printing has been increased from 300,000 to 575,000 copies.

Government officials are reviewing the book to see if any sensitive information was revealed. Owen, a pseudonym for a former SEAL widely believe to be Matt Bissonnette, said in a statement that he had a "strict desire" not to endanger national security.

Dean Baker: Romney Pledges a Fed that Will Screw Workers

Last week Mitt Romney committed himself to picking a Federal Reserve Board chairman that will try to keep workers' wage down, likely costing them tens of thousands of dollars over the next decade. You remember reading the front page news stories on this pronouncement?

Of course you didn't read them, because the media largely ignored President Romney's statement about his choice of Fed chairs. And all of them ignored its implications for people's wages and living standards. The media would much rather focus on the ongoing debate over President Obama's birth certificate or, when we are lucky, tax policy decisions that might in the extreme case make $1,000-$2,000 a year in difference to the typical family. The much more important policy decisions that allow people like Mitt Romney to be incredibly wealthy and the rest of the country to be struggling are totally off the media's radar screen.

Romney's statement about the Fed fits in the latter category because he said that he would pick a chair who supports a "strong dollar." The implication is that he wants the Fed to run policies that keep the dollar over-valued relative to other currencies, making U.S. goods uncompetitive in international markets.

The arithmetic on this is fairly simple. If the dollar is 20 percent above its proper value, then it means that prices of goods produced in the United States are effectively 20 percent higher relative to the goods produced in other countries. This strong dollar effectively makes imports 20 percent cheaper relative to goods produced in the United States. That naturally means that we will purchase more goods produced in Mexico, China and other countries and fewer goods produced in the United States.

On the flip side, this strong dollar means that our exports are 20 percent more expensive to people in other countries than would otherwise be the case. This is equivalent to putting a 20 percent tariff on everything that we export. Needless to say, this will seriously depress our exports to the rest of the world.

The over-valued dollar is by far the main reason that we have a $600 billion dollar (4 percent of GDP) deficit with the rest of the world. This deficit implies a loss of more than 6 million jobs, the vast majority of which would be in manufacturing.

Imagine how different the labor market would look today if we suddenly had an additional 6 million jobs, most of which were in manufacturing. Workers would have vastly more bargaining power on the job. Many could move from lower-paying jobs in retail or elsewhere in service sector to higher paying jobs in manufacturing. Even the workers who remained in the service sector would benefit from having a large number of additional job openings in manufacturing, since employers would know that workers had better paying options and therefore would have to pay higher wages to retain workers.

The arithmetic on this is striking. Productivity is projected to grow by more than 25 percent of the next decade. If workers get their share of productivity growth this would imply an increase in annual income for the typical family of approximately $12,000 by 2022. On the other hand, with a Fed following Romney's strong dollar policy, workers in 2022 will be lucky if their wages are as high as they are today.

Unfortunately there is no debate or even discussion of Fed policy and the dollar. Part of the reason is that both parties largely agree on the policy. After all, the strong dollar first became official policy under President Clinton, when Robert Rubin was Treasury Secretary.

While the strong dollar may be a loser for most people, it does offer large benefits for people like Mitt Romney, Robert Rubin and other members of the one percent. These people are all heavily involved in global business and their money goes further when buying into China, India and elsewhere when the dollar is stronger.

In addition, there are retail companies like Wal-Mart who have set up low-cost supply chains in the developing world that depend on an over-valued dollar. Do you think they want to see the price of the goods they purchase overseas rise by 20 percent when measured in dollars? The same applies to manufacturing companies like General Electric who produce most of what they sell in the United States overseas.

There is even a class dimension to the news coverage of the issue. Leading national reporters (and congressional staffers) like to take vacations in Europe and other foreign countries. Do you think they want to pay 20 percent more for these trips? That would be like a tax increase and we know how wealthy people feel about tax increases.

All of this means that when it comes to issues that will have a large impact on the living standards of ordinary working people, there is not even a debate in this election. We will probably be arguing over the status of the Bush tax cuts for the rich for at least another decade; meanwhile the elites in both parties will be doing everything they can to ensure that most people have no taxable income.

Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808

The Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830TG-6808 is one of the more recent models in the TimelineX fold, a mainstay of the mainstream laptop aisle recognizable by its cobalt blue color and distinguished with some of the best battery life of any laptop line. If the 14-inch AS4830TG-6808 doesn't have the ultrathin design that is so in vogue right now, it still delivers decent performance and a solid user experience without breaking the bank.

Design
The TimelineX AS4830TG-6808 should look familiar to anyone who's ever seen a member of the Acer TimelineX series. The cobalt blue finish, aluminum lid, and two-tone palm rest are all the same as seen on previous models. The black chiclet keys are comfortable to type on, but the lack of backlighting means that non-touch typists will be out of luck in darkened rooms, and the arrow keys are on the small side for an otherwise full-size keyboard. The touchpad is placed just to the left of center, but its multitouch surface and separate left and right buttons make it pretty foolproof.

Measuring 1.2 by 13.3 by 9.4 inches (HWD), the TimelineX AS480TG-6808 is one of the thinner mainstream laptops?even more svelte than the Asus K53SD-DS51 and the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 , both 1.4 inches thick. Weighing in at 4.56 pounds, it's also not too heavy.

The 14-inch widescreen display has an average resolution (1,366 by 768), but it's sufficient for enjoying 720p video and large enough to tile windows side by side for easy multitasking. When tested with trailers for The Dark Knight Rises, the audio was clear, but lacking in bass.

Features
The Acer Aspire TimelineX is outfitted with two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an Ethernet connection, and a built-in card reader (SD/xD/MMC/MS/MS Pro). A 1.3-megapixel webcam sits above the screen for video chat with decent picture quality. Bluetooth 2.1 lets you wirelessly connect to headsets or transfer data to a phone or tablet, and 802.11n Wi-Fi gives you all the Web connectivity you need. An HDMI output lets you connect directly to an HDTV or monitor, but if you want to ditch the cable the Aspire TimelineX is also equipped with WiDi 2.0, which lets you stream HD content wirelessly through an adapter like the Netgear Push2TV .

On the side of the laptop is a tray-loading DVD?RW drive with dual-layer support, which is par for the course in mainstream laptops. Similar drives are found in the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 and the Lenovo IdeaPad U400 , although the U400 utilizes a slot-loading drive. Storage comes by way of a 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive, but it's smaller than you'll find in most comparable systems?750GB has become much more common.

As for software, you'll find several programs preinstalled on the laptop, including Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and a 60-day trial of McAfee Internet Security Suite?double the usual 30-day period, but we'd still prefer 12 months or more for real protection. Acer covers the Aspire TimelineX with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 In addition to 4GB of RAM, the Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 utilizes a second-generation Intel Core i5-2450M dual-core processor. It may not match the speed and energy efficiency of current third-generation processors, but it still provides enough horsepower for Web browsing, light photo editing, and even gaming. The 4830TG-6808 scored 2,214 in Futuremark PCMark 7, behind the similarly equipped Lenovo IdeaPad U400 (2,309) and the quad-core third-generation Core i7?equipped processor seen in the IdeaPad Y480 (2,610). The TimelineX also did moderately well in our CineBench R11.5 rendering test (2.76), but was still handily beaten by the Lenovo Y480 (6.26).

Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808

The TimelineX also has an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics processor, with 1GB of dedicated memory. This discrete processor provided sufficient oomph to score 9,603 in 3DMark06 and to turn out playable frame rates in our Crysis and Lost Planet 2 gaming tests (38 frames per second, or fps, in each). Optimus automatic switching alternates between the discrete graphics card and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 to preserve battery life without compromising the quality of graphics.

Battery life is one area where the Aspire TimelineX model line has made a name for itself. With its six-cell battery, the 4830TG-6808 lasted 9 hours 35 minutes on a single charge when tested with MobileMark. This is a moderate improvement over the previous Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 (9:19) and hours longer than competitors like the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 (4:48), Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 (5:01), and Lenovo IdeaPad U400 (6:00).

Ultimately, although the Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 is a bit behind the curve in terms of processing hardware, it's still an affordable, capable laptop that offers strong battery life and plenty of features for a reasonable price. It may not top the high-octane processing power of the Editors' Choice Lenovo IdeaPad Y480, but it's still a smart buy, and smart shoppers will likely find it being sold for even less.

BENCHMARK TEST RESULTS:

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 with several other laptops side by side.

Russian eco-warrior turns to politics to challenge Putin

KHIMKI, Russia (Reuters) - Russian environmentalist and protest leader Yevgeniya Chirikova had not even made it to the local election headquarters to register as a candidate on Monday before opponents ran up and showered her with fake $100 bills as she spoke to reporters.

The aim was clear: to damage her campaign to become mayor of Khimki, a town just outside northwestern Moscow, by portraying her as a tool of the United States, which President Vladimir Putin has accused of fomenting opposition to his 12-year-rule.

Chirikova, one of the leading lights of protests this year against Putin, initially looked flustered as banknotes blew around her. But she soon regained her composure and laughed as her four hecklers unfurled a U.S. flag behind her and tried to push a small Stars and Stripes into her hand for the cameras.

Chirikova - who has been detained, treated roughly by police and received threats on her and her family because of her environmental work - is undaunted by the threat of harassment as she joins an opposition campaign to chip away at Putin's authority by challenging his party in local elections.

"The more they oppress us, the more it shows we are right to really cause them trouble," Chirikova, 35, told Reuters before registering her candidacy in Khimki, a town of 200,000 dominated by high-rise apartment blocs.

"I fear nothing. I really don't know what could stop me now," she said.

Chirikova, who became one of the Kremlin's most strident critics by organizing protests against the construction of a road through a forest near Khimki, is the most prominent opposition politician running in local polls on October 14.

Success would make little dent in Putin's authority and that of the ruling United Russia party, but taking control of Khimki would signal that the opposition may be finally able to start building on the momentum gained in this year's protests.

The election will also test the Kremlin's willingness to tolerate an opposition challenge at the polls after a series of moves which the opposition has depicted as a crackdown on dissent since Putin returned to the presidency in May.

OPPOSITION TO HIGHWAY

Chirikova has burnished her opposition credentials in the past eight months, helping organize the anti-Putin protests that began last December over allegations of fraud in a parliamentary election, at times addressing the large crowds they attracted.

She sees her foray into politics partly as a continuation of her campaign to improve the environment.

"We have yellow water in our sinks, horrible traffic jams, no traffic lights," she said. "I would like my child to be able to go to school safely. I would like to turn this city into a place where all mothers will be free of those fears."

Her life changed when she noticed during a walk in the forest near her Khimki apartment five years ago that some of the trees had been marked for what she later learned was demolition to make way for a highway.

In what was then an unusual example of Russians taking matters into their own hands to challenge the authorities, she started protests in the forest that delayed, but did not halt, work on the road.

The number of protesters peaked at about 3,000, witnesses said, after a camp they had set up in the forest was raided by masked men.

A journalist who supported the protests and one of the protesters were badly beaten in separate incidents and left with brain damage. The culprits were never identified, and detentions were frequent at rallies against the building of the road.

Social services threatened at one stage to take Chirikova's two children into custody, accusing her of neglect, she said.

But her protest movement established Chirikova as one of the leading voices of the opposition and is often cited by protest leaders as having played a vital role in the birth of a civil society in Russia after decades of Soviet rule.

"People realized they could only change things from below," she said, pointing to the protests in the Khimki forest as a sign that Russians were losing their blind faith in authorities.

Her chances of success are hard to gauge as there are no independent opinion polls in an election campaign that is just starting. She won 15 percent of votes when she ran for mayor of Khimki in 2009, seven percentage points fewer than the winner.

The main electoral issues in Russia are typically economic concerns but an opinion poll released by the independent Levada research group in 2010 showed that three quarters of Khimki residents opposed the new road.

SEEKING UNITY

The Khimki election race could become another test of Putin's readiness to tolerate dissent after a summer in which parliament rushed through several laws seen by the opposition as intended to restrict their actions - such as tightening control of the Internet, which is used to spread word of protest rallies, and increasing potential fines for protesters.

A Moscow court also handed a two-year jail term this month to three women from the Pussy Riot punk band who sang a profanity-laced song against Putin in a Russian Orthodox church, a sentence criticized as harsh abroad although opinion polls showed few Russians sympathized with the way they protested.

The Kremlin denies launching any crackdown on dissent and says it had no say in the Pussy Riot verdict. It also portrays the opposition as too disunited and short of ideas to mount a serious threat to Putin, pointing out that he won nearly two-thirds of the votes cast in the March 4 presidential election.

Kremlin sources say Putin won considerable support by attacking the West during his election campaign and accusing protest leaders of being foreign governments' stooges.

But the opposition has already had some electoral success since the presidential poll, notably defeating United Russia's candidate in the mayoral race in Yaroslavl, north of Moscow.

Chirikova has almost no political experience and has no political party behind her. Her chances may depend on whether she can unite parties that share her fear that Putin's return to the Kremlin for another six years after four years as premier will stifle political and economic reform.

The liberal Yabloko party, a coalition led by former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and two other opposition leaders, and protest leader Alexei Navalny have backed her candidacy although it is not clear how far their influence goes in Khimki.

The other challengers in the election, called after the resignation of Mayor Vladimir Strelchenko, are not yet known because registration of candidates has only just begun. An official statement said only that Strelchenko had stepped aside in a routine rotation of officials. Inside Australian PM's political problems is a nugget of workplace ...

Prime Minister Gillard (centre) and others at Government House Canberra in March 2012

The Australian Prime?Minister, Julia Gillard, has been under intense media pressure?over an issue concerning her conduct as a lawyer around 17 years ago.

It involves legal work for unions, her personal relationship at the time with a union official who has been described as ?dodgy? and of most relevance to this blog, workplace safety.

Missed in all the debate is that the workplace safety issue seems to support the assertions of many in the business and industry associations that OHS is frequently used by trade?unions?as an excuse for action in other areas. ?These other areas are usually industrial relations but in this instance OHS was used to mask a unionist?s alleged misuse of member and industry funds.

In 1995, Julia Gillard was asked to?establish?a fund for an official of the Australian Workers Union, Bruce Wilson. ?The fund was to raise money to support a re-election campaign for union officials who would be campaigning on the basis of improving the workplace safety conditions of members. ?It appears that after this fund was established, Wilson allegedly misused the fund for his own gain and not in the context of workplace safety.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald:

?Mr Wilson was accused of rorting hundreds of thousands of dollars designated for the union and siphoning the money into an account established by his lawyer, Ms Gillard. Some of the money was used allegedly to buy a house in Fitzroy. ?

At a long media conference on 23 August 2012 the Prime?Minister?was asked about the fund and workplace safety. ?Below are extracts from the transcript.

?JOURNALIST: Did you help to draft the document that you knew was false because the purpose of the association was fundraising for a union election, not workplace safety, as stated in that document?

PM: ?.My understanding of the purpose of this association was to support the re-election of union officials who would run a campaign saying that they wanted re-election because they were committed to reforming workplaces in a certain way, to increasing occupational health and safety, to improving the conditions of the members of the union.

That was my understanding of the purpose of the association, and so I provided legal advice for the association. ?..?

?JOURNALIST: Ms Gillard, the Melbourne house that was later bought with funds from this?association. Can you tell us about how much you knew about that house, your involvement in that?house and whether you knew it was paid for by the association and how that relates to workplace?safety?

PM: ??.My understanding about that house was that it was being purchased by Mr Blewitt. It was being?purchased as an investment property. It was purchased on the understanding that Mr Wilson?would be the tenant of the property and that?Mr Blewitt was in a position with a mortgage like an?ordinary person to purchase the property.?

Business and industry associations have for many years asserted that workplace safety issues are used as an industrial relations tool. ?The current political storm in Australia re-illustrates one instance of a trade union masking general re-election fundraising as a workplace safety?initiative. ?This does not verify the business and industry associations assertions about OHS but it adds weight to those assertions.

Is the evidence valid?

The Cole Royal Commission into the Building and Construction Industry is often quoted in support of the industrial tool of OHS argument. ?Commissioner Cole stated that:

?..the fact remains that safety issues are often inappropriately used as levers in an?attempt to further unrelated industrial ends. The scope for this must be reduced and if possible?eliminated.? (page 104, Vol. 6)

However this ?fact? is based primarily on the submissions from construction companies and industry bodies and may be a manifestation of the ?effective frequency??effect, purposely or subconsciously,?rather than the establishment of a truth or fact.

The Royal Commission quotes many submissions on the issue but the many equivocations in both private and government quotes emphasis the ?potential? and what ?may happen? rather than facts.

Grocon says

??that on some occasions the assertion of ?safety? is used as a?smoke screen for what is really an industrial issue.? (emphasis added) (page 97. Vol 6)

The Commonwealth of Australia dots is submission with ?the potential for use (or abuse) of OHS concerns by unions?? and ??.such action may lead to OHS concerns?.??(emphasis added) (page 97. Vol 6)

Even when there is a heading of ?Evidence of misuse of occupational health and safety issues for unrelated industrial ends?, equivocations abound. ?Minutes of a meeting with the Construction Safety Managers and Officers Association of Queensland Inc says:

??the participants considered that the building industry unions in?Queensland often exploited a concern about safety for other industrial purposes. In?their experience, the unions often either manufactured or exaggerated a question?about safety, or linked the resolution of a genuine question about safety to industrial?questions.??(page 98. Vol 6)

The Royal Commissioner, Terence Cole, states that

?My own investigations during this Commission have confirmed that there is widespread?exploitation of occupational health and safety issues by unions in efforts to secure unrelated?industrial ends. Some examples dealt with in more detail in the case studies will suffice.??(page 100. Vol 6)

No?references?are made to these case studies and it would take considerable time to verify or contest Cole?s investigations, a task that does not seem to have been undertaken but is sorely needed.

It is also important to note the distinction in the heading quoted above about using OHS for ?unrelated industrial ends?. ?This distinction seems to be lost in much of the industrial relations debate. ?How many instances of disputes arising from OHS issues have been found to be legitimate?

Effective Frequency ? Truth through repetition of falsehoods

In one area of public policy and?corporate?decision-making, there is the push for ?evidence-based decision making? and in another there is the application of advertising technique of repeating a belief so?frequently?and ardently that that belief can become a truth or generates a ?need? ? ?effective frequency?. ?Workplace safety seems to be caught in the middle. ?Every time someone states that ?OHS is used as an industrial relations tool?, evidence should be requested. ?Making this request, asking the questions, is?likely?to reveal that the evidence is anecdotal and cannot be traced to a specific instance or set of circumstances. ?It is possible that the ?evidence? could turn out to be no no more than a FOAF -?evidence?from a Friend Of A Friend.

Behind many of the accusations of the Prime Minister?s conduct is a cynicism that Julia Gillard must have known of the intended purpose for the funds she established. ?Some are saying that ?everyone knows that such fundraising methods were dodgy? and by implication workplace safety, as advocated?through?the trade union movement, is also dodgy and always undertaken for ulterior motives. ?Often these comments are insulting to the safety professionals and advocates but no one, other than trade unionists, feels able or confident to contest these slurs.

There are many lessons from the Prime Minister Gillard?s current political problems and although, admittedly, workplace safety is a very minor part of those problems, it should not be overlooked. ?The media has repeatedly resurrected claims about her conduct as a lawyer and dealings with Bruce Wilson and is?likely?to continue to do so, so workplace safety will also be dragged along, reinforcing its supposed manipulation for industrial means. ?Each time this occurs, we must ask for evidence so that myths are not perpetuated.

(AP) ? The death toll from Tropical Storm Isaac has climbed to nine after authorities in the Dominican Republic reported two deaths Sunday.

Authorities have already reported seven deaths in Haiti, the impoverished country that shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.

Early Sunday afternoon, Dominican police reported that two men were swept away by flooded rivers that had burst their banks. One of the victims was identified as Pedro Peralta, a former mayor in Villa Altagracia, a town northwest of the capital of Santo Domingo. His body was recovered Sunday by rescuers on the banks of the Haina River.

Another male victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was swept away by the Yaguaza River, according to Dominican police.

In neighboring Haiti, Joseph Edgard Celestin of Haiti's Civil Protection Office offered few details Sunday on how each person died in that country but noted that one man was swept away as he tried to cross a river in a village in northern Haiti.

In a separate report, Haiti's Civil Protection Office said a 51-year-old woman was killed in the southern coastal town of Marigot after a tree fell on her home. A 10-year-old girl was killed in the village of Thomazeau after a wall collapsed on her.

The number of people evacuated due to flooding also rose. More than 14,000 people have left their homes throughout Haiti and another 13,500 people were living in temporary shelters, the Civil Protection Office reported. Some 8,400 evacuees were in the country's western department, the most populous and where the capital of Port-au-Prince is located.

A dozen houses were destroyed and another 269 damaged, the Haitian government reported. Four people were injured, including a man who fell from a tree.

Impoverished Haiti is prone to flooding and mudslides because much of the country is heavily deforested and rainwater rushes down barren mountainsides.

The center of Tropical Storm Isaac passed Haiti's southern peninsula early Saturday.

(AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett and outfielder Carl Crawford from Boston on Saturday, hoping to boost their playoff hopes by taking on the underperforming and high-priced stars who failed to thrive in a fractious Red Sox clubhouse.

Boston also sent infielder Nick Punto and about $11 million in cash to the Dodgers in the nine-player trade that was the biggest in Los Angeles' history. The Red Sox acquired first baseman James Loney, pitcher Allen Webster, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and two players to be named.

"They're in a pennant race and have an opportunity to add talent and were focused on that," Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said. "It'll be our job to take advantage of this opportunity and build the next big Red Sox team."

Under a rich new ownership group that includes NBA star Magic Johnson, the Dodgers entered the day three games behind San Francisco for the NL West lead and in the midst of the wild-card race. They have dramatically revamped their roster in the last month with trades, acquiring shortstop Hanley Ramirez, outfielder Shane Victorino, starter Joe Blanton and reliever Brandon League and now the three Red Sox players ? Crawford is recovering from surgery ? less than a week before the Aug. 31 deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason.

"We continue to do everything in our power to strengthen our team for the stretch drive in an effort to reach the postseason," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said in a statement. "This trade today exemplifies ownership's commitment to making the team as good as possible not only for 2012 but for many seasons to come."

For the Red Sox, who entered the night 13? games back in the AL East, the trade signaled a concession for 2012 and a chance to rebuild without hefty contracts given during an undisciplined foray into free agency that, Cherington conceded, has not worked out. Even with $11 million going to the Dodgers, according to a baseball official with knowledge of the deal, Boston will save more than $250 million in salary from now through 2018.

"To build the team we need and the fans deserve and we want required more of a bold move," Cherington said. "It was a difficult thing to do to trade away four players like this. Beckett, in particular has been here a long time and been here for some of our best times in some of our biggest games."

But Beckett, who was a key part of the team that won the 2007 World Series, was also the ringleader in last year's collapse, when the ballclub went 7-20 in September and missed a playoff spot on the final day of the season. Reports of players drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games surfaced afterward, and Beckett's haughty demeanor ? and rising ERA ? continued to alienate fans.

The 2003 World Series MVP with the Florida Marlins, Beckett now moves from the home of Dunkin' Donuts to the land of In-N-Out Burger, bringing with him a pair of other players who were not productive enough to justify their contracts. Beckett was due $31.5 million over the next two years; Gonzalez has $127 million coming through 2018; Crawford is due $102.5 million over the next five seasons.

Both Cherington, who replaced Theo Epstein after the September collapse, and manager Bobby Valentine, who was brought in to replace Terry Francona, defended their departing players.

"The bottom line is we haven't won enough games. That goes back to last September," Cherington said. "We just haven't performed on the field. As a team we haven't performed. We've had individuals perform. This is not about the four players we gave up ? anything particularly they did wrong. We just didn't perform as a team."

Players traded in August have to first pass through waivers. Other teams had a chance to claim Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford before the Dodgers, but their high price tags were likely a deterrent.

Red Sox players said before Saturday night's game against Kansas City that they were surprised to see their longtime teammates gone in a deal that came together quickly. Valentine said the speed of the deal left him little time to think about how it affected the rest of the season and beyond, though he was not as willing as Cherington to talk about 2013 as if the 2012 season was over.

Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford in the Fenway Park clubhouse had already been cleared out Saturday afternoon. Boston pitcher John Lackey had already claimed Beckett's locker and the others' were left with generic nameplates.

Gonzalez, a former San Diego Padres star, said on Twitter in English and Spanish that he was excited to get back to California. Beckett joined the social media site to thank Red Sox fans, and Punto posted a picture of the three of them on what appears to be a private jet with the caption, "dodgers doing it first class!"

The 32-year-old Beckett is 5-11 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts this season. A three-time All-Star, he is 130-92 lifetime with a 3.93 ERA.

Gonzalez, 30, is a four-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove winner. He hit .300 with 15 home runs and 86 RBIs this season, his second since being traded by San Diego to Boston.

Crawford, at 31, hit .282 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 31 games this season. He had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow this week and is expected to take six to nine months to recover. Crawford was a four-time All-Star with Tampa Bay before signing with Boston.

The 34-year-old Punto hit .200 with one homer and 10 RBIs as a backup.

Loney hit .254 with four homers and 33 RBIs for the Dodgers this season. At 28, he'd spent his whole career in Los Angeles.

The 25-year-old DeJesus was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He hit .273 in 23 games for the Dodgers this year. Webster, a 22-year-old right-hander, was 6-8 with a 3.55 ERA at Double-A Chattanooga.
