iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Which one should you get?

iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Which one should you get?

Apple has released the taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter iPhone 5 -- and we've got your definitive iPhone 5 review right here -- and now Samsung is bringing their next-generation giant, the Galaxy Note 2 to market.

As much as Samsung has been labeled a "copyist" over the course of the last couple years, the Galaxy Note series has always been a big exception, literally. Due to its size, some have labeled it a "phablet", half phone, half tablet. While it's both of those things, it's also neither. It's really a Wacom-style digitizer put into highly mobile form. And as anyone who's ever used a Wacom knows, it resembles a stylus in shape only.

So what happens when you put Apple's precision up against Samsung's power? The iPhone 5's elegance against the Galaxy Note 2's enormity? Let's take a look.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Hardware and software

Android Central is working on a full review now, and we'll add a link to it here as soon as it's live. In the meantime, here are James Richardson's first impressions and hands-on with the Galaxy Note 2.

Powered by a quad-core 1.6 GHz Exynos 4 processor, the Galaxy Note 2 has some substantial horsepower behind it, along with a plentiful 2GB of on-board RAM. Combined with a whopping 3100mAh battery, we're expecting some serious longevity from this device. The Note 2 runs Jelly Bean out of the box, making Samsung's phone/tablet hybrid the first to ship with Android 4.1. And it now sports a 5.55-inch (non-PenTile) HD SuperAMOLED 1280x720 display, protected by Gorilla Glass 2. The extra size of the phone does add few of grams to its weight -- at 180 grams it isn't light, but it's not terribly heavy considering its monstrous size.

There are also numerous software enhancements, including the ability to command an on-screen cursor by hovering the stylus over the screen. This can be used to peek into gallery folders, calendar events expandable areas. And the usual selection of Samsung drawing and note-taking apps is included too, as are all of the software features of the Galaxy S3.

Apple iPhone 5: Hardware and software

The iPhone 5 has a newly re-designed unibody aluminum chassis to allow for a bigger 4-inch screen in a phone that's 12% smaller by volume. It's taller but not wider, thinner and also lighter. That 4-inch screen also uses in-cell technology to combine the touch sensor right into the LCD. At 1136x640 and 326ppi, it's still backlit LED, and still IPS, and technically the best, most advanced panel on the planet for now. Apple also rolled their own, custom Apple A6 processor this time, based on ARM v7s, for amazing performance and excellent power management. There's still no NFC, but there is CDMA, HSPA, and international LTE.

iOS 6 comes loaded on the iPhone 5, and includes a new, controversial Maps app, some great extensions to Siri, deep Facebook integration, Passbook, and enhancements to FaceTime, Mail, Safari, Photo Stream, and Accessibility. And because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, there's no integration, no added interface layers, and a seamless experience overall.

Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 2: The bottom line

While the story of the Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 might remain one of precision vs. power, when it comes to the iPhone 5 vs. the Galaxy Note 2, the elegance vs. enormity line requires deeper inspection. A 5.5-inch phone display is something that fits the needs of a very specific niche -- namely those that want more than a traditional phone -- those who essentially want a mobile notepad.

For this reason, for most people, the iPhone remains the default choice, and the perfect blend of killer design and absolute ease of use. If you don't like something about the iPhone, there are also a bunch of great alternatives to consider, including the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X, or the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920.

The Galaxy Note 2, due to its size and its Wacom technology, is a very, very specific one, and you'll likely know it you need it.

Military heroes? Social Security numbers posted online

The Social Security numbers of some of the nation?s most highly decorated Army war heroes from Iraq and Afghanistan were posted this week by a civilian contractor on a publicly available website.

The Army has launched an investigation to find out how the privacy of its heroes was violated.

Of more than 500 names and profiles on the site, 31 contain Social Security numbers. Six are Medal of Honor recipients, two of whom are alive. There are also Social Security numbers for 25 soldiers who earned the Distinguished Service Cross, 22 of whom are living.

Army spokesman George Wright told The Washington Times on Friday the service has launched an investigation to determine how the Army data was handled. He said the contractor was contacted and told to remove the site.

?We take this matter seriously,? Mr. Wright said.

By Friday evening, The Times could still access the Web address for the list of heroes, their accomplishments in battle, and, in 31 cases, the Social Security numbers.

The site was discovered by a veteran doing research on war heroes.

Former ArmyStaff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta earned the Medal of Honor, presented by President Obama, for saving the lives of comrades in Afghanistan on Oct. 25, 2007. He left the Army last year and is attending college.

The Times provided him a copy of his data on the website.

?My reaction is ?What a bummer!?? he said in an email. ?Our Socials are not public information for a reason. I don?t know why someone would make them public.?

1st Sgt. Leroy Petry is the Army?s lone Medal of Honor recipient on active duty. A Ranger, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during a firefight in Afghanistan.

Contracted by The Times and shown the data, Sgt. Petry said he immediately contracted Army Special Operations Command.

?It?s disappointing. You always have the fear of fraud,? he said. ?The bigger question is how did they get it and is the person who released it being held responsible.?

Doug Sterner, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, has been urging the Pentagon to set up a database of citations for valor in the war on terror. He is the curator of the Hall of Valor website on MilitaryTimes.com.

What struck Mr. Sterner is how complete the database is. ?It?s an impressive piece of work,? he told The Times. ?This is the single most complete and accurate compilation of Army awards I have found since World War II.?

(AP) ? Several thousand people poured into the streets of Haiti's capital on Sunday to protest the government of President Michel Martelly.

It was among the biggest demonstrations this year in Port-au-Prince against the first-time leader as he tries to rebuild the impoverished nation following a powerful 2010 earthquake that displaced more than a million people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Demonstrators' complaints included the high cost of living, rising food prices and allegations of corruption as they snaked through the poorer neighborhoods Port-au-Prince. Some protesters carried small red cards to suggest that Martelly has committed too many fouls since he was sworn in as president in May 2011.

The Martelly government had no immediate public reaction to the protest.

Martelly, a pop music star before he turned to politics, presented himself as an outsider when he ran for the presidency. He promised free schooling and houses for people displaced by the earthquake. But some Haitians complain that Martelly has fallen short of improving their lives in one of the poorest countries in the world.

"The president has made so many promises but nothing has become a reality," protester Max Dorlien said. "It's only a clique of his friends who are making money."

The Sunday protest followed several weeks of mostly peaceful demonstrations in the countryside, and more are planned for October.

It also marked the 21st anniversary of the first ouster of two-time President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a former priest who returned to Haiti last year after seven years in exile. Since his return, Aristide has remained in his compound in the capital and out of the public spotlight, fueling widespread speculation on his political relevance.

Gory past sounds death knell for building | Local | News | The ...

If heritage advocates don?t scream too loudly over the Queens Ave. building targeted by Shmuel Farhi?s wrecking ball, there?s likely a very good ? or, at least, very grisly ? reason.

City politicians will likely decide in November whether to let the real estate magnate raze the building at 199 Queens, near Richmond St., to build what he pledges will be a $50-million mixed-use tower.

Council?s heritage advisers have OK?d Farhi?s plan ? and one of London?s most passionate history buffs has no doubt there will be little fight to stop the demolition on heritage grounds.

Why?

Because a push to underscore the historic value would no doubt focus on its single most significant event: it was where officials in 1879 found the body of Kate Gardner, believed to have been the first victim of a budding serial killer some consider a Jack The Ripper suspect.

?It would be the height of poor taste? to promote that, said heritage activist Joe O?Neil. ?If . . . My Sister?s Place or something like that wanted to move in and name the house after Kate Gardner that would be different, but to just say this should be a heritage house because of a murder would be offensive.??

Gardner, a pregnant, 21-year-old Tecumseh House Hotel worker, was found dead behind the house at 199 Queens on May 3, 1879. Also backing onto that spot was the Dundas St. office of Dr. Thomas Neill Cream, an abortionist.

Though a London jury found Gardner died ?from the effects of chloroform,? they did not name a suspect. But many in London eyed Cream ? who skipped town for Chicago, where he committed at least one murder and was jailed in 1881.

The Ripper-Cream link (which O?Neil and many serious historians doubt) hinges on when the deadly doctor was released from jail. Official records say it was 1891, three years after the never-found Ripper stalked London, England?s Whitechapel area and killed five prostitutes.

Some wonder, though, if he got out earlier and was back in England in 1888 for the infamous killing spree many believe must have been committed by a doctor.

This much is certain: Cream was back in England in 1891 and 1892 and was convicted and hanged for killing four prostitutes. (He claimed ?I am Jack . . .? just as he was hanged.)

Angus McLaren, a University of Victoria professor who wrote about Cream?s England crimes, doubts he was the Ripper. But in a 2004 interview he told The Free Press: ?There was probably a copycat aspect to (Cream?s) killings in the sense that the notion of killing prostitutes must have been very much in the air? post-Ripper.

Back here in London, O?Neil says he could see no heritage advocate using the Gardner death to help preserve Farhi?s building at 199 Queens.

?I don?t know anyone in the past who has used an infamous murder to justify (saving) any sort of historic site.?

Farhi has pledged to build a $50-million structure that would include ground-floor commercial space, several stories of residential units and many levels of what he calls much-needed parking.

White shark diets vary with age and among individuals

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Many white sharks shift from fish to marine mammals as they mature, but individual sharks show surprising variability in dietary preferences.

White sharks, the largest predatory sharks in the ocean, are thought of as apex predators that feed primarily on seals and sea lions. But a new study by researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows surprising variability in the dietary preferences of individual sharks.

The researchers described their findings in a paper published online September 28 in PLoS ONE. They analyzed the composition of growth bands in shark vertebrae to trace variations in diet over a shark's lifetime. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen incorporated into an animal's tissues serve as a natural tracer of dietary inputs.

"We did find that white shark diets changed with age, as expected, but we were surprised that the patterns and extent of change differed among individuals," said Sora Kim, who led the study as a UCSC graduate student and is now at the University of Wyoming.

The researchers analyzed vertebrae of 15 adult white sharks that had been caught along the west coast (14 off California and one off Baja California). Sharks in this population consume a wide range of prey, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, fish, and squid. But not every shark eats the same mix of prey, said coauthor Paul Koch, professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UCSC.

"We confirmed that the diets of many individuals observed at seal and sea lion rookeries shift from fish to marine mammals as the sharks mature," he said. "In addition, we discovered that different individual sharks may specialize on different types of prey. These two types of flexibility in feeding behavior are difficult to document using traditional methods, but may be very important for understanding how the population is supported by the eastern Pacific ecosystem and how it may respond to changes in that ecosystem."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently announced that it will consider whether to protect the west coast population of white sharks under the Endangered Species Act.

Tagging studies have shown that the white sharks found along the California coast have a regular migratory pattern, cruising coastal sites from late summer to early winter and moving to offshore areas during the rest of the year. While sharks within this population may have predictable movement patterns, the new study shows that there are important dietary and behavioral differences among individual sharks.

The study relied on vertebrae obtained from white shark specimens in various collections. The sharks had been caught at different times and places along the coast from 1957 to 2000. "Interestingly, we do see a small shift in diet as marine mammal populations increased after the passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1972," Kim said.

In addition to Kim and Koch, the coauthors of the paper include James Estes, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, and Tim Tinker, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

'Carmageddon' the sequel begins on LA freeways

(AP) ? The sequel to Carmageddon has had its midnight premiere, and Los Angeles transportation officials are hoping the weekend proves as successful as last year's first edition.

A 10-mile stretch of one of the world's busiest freeways was shut down early Saturday, and if all goes according to plan it'll stay that way until a bridge is rebuilt before the Monday morning traffic crunch.

For weeks drivers have been warned to stay away from the segment of Interstate 405 that will be shuttered through the Sepulveda Pass on LA's west side for the entire weekend.

If drivers don't avoid the area, officials warn, a city-wide traffic jam could result. But beyond just scare tactics, city officials have been encouraging Southern Californians to get out and enjoy their own neighborhoods on foot, on bikes or via short drives on surface streets.

During a similar closure last year commuters stayed away from the freeway in droves, the shutdown was considered a success, and crews finished the first phase of the work early.

This time, the contractor faces a penalty if the work isn't done in 53 hours.

"The penalty is $6,000 per lane of freeway, per 10 minutes. Let's assume the entire freeway isn't reopened, that's $60,000 every 10 minutes," Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Dave Sotero told KCBS-TV.

Meanwhile, TV news crews have a plan to avoid a traffic jam in the sky as they cover the shutdown.

Residents complained of low-flying, noisy helicopters hovering nonstop over the region last year.

"It was constant," Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, whose members live in many of the homes closest to the freeway, recently told The Associated Press. "It was a combination of the news media paparazzi and tour operators taking people who wanted to get a picture of the 405."

Although the area gets its share of paparazzi helicopters because of Charlie Sheen and other celebrities who live in the area, Close said they usually go away when the sun sets. During Carmageddon, however, the area is brightly illuminated overnight so construction workers can safely do their jobs.

This time, local television news directors have plans to pool coverage by using video from a single helicopter making limited flights over the freeway, according to Rick Terrell, executive director of the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California.

The participating stations include major broadcasters including KABC-TV, KCBS-TV and KTTV-TV.

NASA's TRMM satellite noticed that the intensity of rainfall in Tropical Storm Nadine has diminished today, Sept. 27.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission or TRMM satellite passed over Tropical Storm Nadine on Sept. 27 at 0739 UTC (4:39 a.m. EDT) and at 0917 UTC (5:17 a.m. EDT). At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., several TRMM instruments were used to create a full picture of Nadine's weakened rainfall. The image was created with an enhanced infrared image from TRMM's Visible and InfraRed Scanner (VIRS) overlaid with rainfall data derived from TRMM's Microwave Imager (TMI) instrument. The rainfall image showed Nadine had light rainfall almost surrounding the center of circulation. The heaviest intensity of about 20mm/hour (~.8 inches) appears to be located just northeast of the center.

NASA's Hurricane and Severe Storms Sentinel or HS3 mission sent out the unmanned Global Hawk aircraft to investigate Tropical Storm Nadine again on Sept. 26 and it returned to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Va. on Sept. 27. While over Tropical Storm Nadine, the Global Hawk captured data using instruments aboard and also dropping sensors called sondes into the storm. The dropsonde system ejected the small sensors tied to parachutes that drift down through the storm measuring winds, temperature and humidity.

At 11 a.m. on Sept. 27. Tropical Storm Nadine had maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (95 kmh) and some strengthening is possible, according to the National Hurricane Center. It is located near latitude 28.7 north and longitude 32.4 west. Nadine is moving toward the west-southwest near 7 mph (11 kmh) and is expected to turn west then northwest as it moves around a high pressure area.

Tropical Storm Nadine has now been meandering around within the Atlantic Ocean for sixteen days.

A Love that Fuels Social Action ? Together for Adoption

by Dan Cruver Published Sep 24, 2012

Do we really have time for the robust study of theology when there are so many issues of social justice that need our attention (orphan prevention, family re-unification and preservation, kids aging out of foster care, the support of indigenous adoption efforts, etc)? ?Do we really have time to study the theology of adoption when there is so much to be done in the world now? Isn?t it enough that Scripture commands us to care for the poor and marginalized? Shouldn?t we just get to work?

As I have written before, if we think of theology merely as what can be known about God, as the collection of unearthed biblical information about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, then these questions are legitimate. But if by theology we mean a real relational knowing of God, an ongoing and growing experience of our Triune God, then these questions lose their bite. Yes, theology necessarily involves information about God. Scripture is full of it. But information to theology is like H2O to Niagara. Although you can?t have Niagara without H2O, there are water faucets all over the world that drip drops of H2O every few seconds, but those intermittent (and annoying) drops of H2O?do not a Niagara make! What makes Niagara a world renown waterfall is its seemingly ?infinite? supply of H2O to dazzle and amaze us at its power and beauty.

    A Mere Collection of Facts?

The theology of Adoption is so much more than a collection of biblically gathered facts about God. Theology is ultimately our real (genuine) participation in the Niagara-like-overflowing mutual knowing and loving of the Father and the Son in the communion of the Spirit. This is why I said that theology is infinitely more than true statements about God. The study of theology and honest-to-goodness communion with the Triune God must go hand in hand.

No one?absolutely no one?was and has a greater theological mind than the Son of God. He has forever known the Father through-and-through. For all of eternity past the Son perfectly knew and communed with his Father. Remarkably, this is the Son who became man, who became incarnate and lived among us! By becoming the incarnate Son, Jesus brought his eternal communion with the Father into the world of men?into the very heart of our broken and sin-devastated world! That?s the good news of the Gospel!

Not a Word Against His People

In his very insightful thoughts on Jesus? High Priestly prayer in John 17 (where we find words like the following coming from Jesus? lips: ?Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world?, v. 24), Marcus Rainsford beautifully writes:

?The whole is a beautiful illustration of our blessed Lord?s intercession at the right hand of God. Not a word against His people; no reference to their failings, or their shortcomings; no allusion to what they had done; none to what they were about to do as a body? No, He speaks of them only as they were in the Father?s purpose, as in association with Himself, and as the recipients of the fullness He came down from heaven to bestow upon them? (Our Lord Prays for His Own, pp. 100-101).

Think about it: there is not a love in the universe and beyond that can fuel social action like the eternal love into which we have been brought to participate ? the eternal love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Of this love, C.S. Lewis? childhood hero, George McDonald wrote:

?The secret of the whole story of humanity is the love between the Father and the Son. That is at the root of it all. Upon the love between the Son and the Father hangs the whole universe . . . The love of God is the creating and redeeming, the forming and satisfying power of the universe . . . It is the safety of the great whole. It is the home-atmosphere of all life . . . The whole of the universe was nothing to Jesus without his Father. The day will come when the whole universe will be nothing to us without the Father, but with the Father an endless glory of delight.?

The Heartbeat of T4A and Its People

If you ever want to know what beats in the heart of T4A conferences and events, it?s the eternal love between the Father and the Son. We always want the main thing in the universe ? the Love Story of God the Father and the Son in the communion of the Spirit ? to be the main thing in our conferences. Nothing fuels social action like participation in the love between the Father and the Son.

So, it is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us this coming October 4-5 in Louisville at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as we take a ?deep-space exploration into Our Triune God & the Pastor: A Theology of Adoption for the Church (and for everyone who belongs to one!).

Please learn more about this unique conference here: Neither Aslan nor Adoption are Tame.

Indestructible brings free multiplayer demolition derby to Android

    Android Central

Glu has just launched a free-to-play multiplayer game on Google Play called Indestructible. It puts players in the driver's seat of some dangerous vehicles, and pits them against others online. More often than not, they're just cars with all manner of dozer blades, laser cannons, and armor plating riveted to them, but you'll also see armored personnel carriers, hovercraft, and semi trailers. game modes include the good old-fashioned deathmatch, capture the flag, and a collection game type called recover the charge. As you play through, you earn experience points, level up, upgrade skills, and unlock new gear for your various cars.

Those of you that are worried that this is a pay-to-win scenario, don't be. I hopped into a game last night, and came out on top even though I was using the bare-bones entry-level vehicle. Some of the upgrades are really sweet, and the four-player action ran nice and smooth on my Nexus 7.

National GOP?s redistricting gurus paint Texas? mapmakers as blundering know-it-alls

Texas GOP legislative leaders blew off advice from some of their national party?s?redistricting experts and went for broke in their congressional remap last year, producing ?chaos? and denying the state a chance to slow the Mitt Romney bandwagon in March?s super Tuesday presidential primary, according to a published report.

Texan Robert Draper, writing in The Atlantic magazine, quotes Washington-based, Republican?redistricting consultant Tom Hofeller as saying that until the next census is taken in 2020, the Lone Star state will provide a cautionary tale of how a remap effort can go wrong.

?The new horror story, he?s decided, will be Texas, which stood, this past cycle,?as a powerful example of how reckless a redistricting process can become,? Draper writes, speaking of Hofeller.

Draper notes that the state GOP?s ?mangled effort? to extract a net gain of four Republican U.S. House seats ? and? to yield not a single new one to Hispanics and blacks who fueled Texas? population growth ? triggered an ?entirely predictable consequence? that Hofeller and other Washington Republicans warned of:?The new congressional and legislative maps have ricocheted between three federal courts,?which delayed the state?s GOP primary until late May, long after conservatives Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, one of whom probably would have carried Texas,?had conceded defeat to Romney.

Draper quotes an unnamed GOP legislative leader as saying Hofeller and Republican National Committee counsel Dale Oldham ?created an adversarial relationship? and ?rubbed raw? the Legislature?s bigwigs.

Texas instead used inexperienced staff and legislative point men, Draper says.

U.S. Rep. Lynn?Westmoreland, R-Ga., described on his website?as the House GOP campaign committee?s vice chair overseeing congressional remapping efforts for this cycle, told Draper the state?s legislative leaders solicited no advice

?Well, the Texas Legislature basically told me,??We?re Texas, and we?re gonna handle our maps,?? Westmoreland said. ?You know, I?m just saying that when you have a population increase of 4 million, and the majority of that is minority, you?d better take that into consideration.?

Actually, it was excluded from view. And the courts insisted on drawing a new minority-dominated congressional district in Dallas-Fort Worth, which Democratic state Rep. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth is likely to capture in November.

Draper?s piece also describes blow-back from tea party types?who?ve protested?U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess? vote for last summer?s debt-ceiling deal. The Denton County Republican ?dipped his toe in the moderate waters,? Draper says. And it has vivid illustrations of such redistricting gems as the ?Glock Pistol,? the 27th Congressional District centered on Corpus Christi, and the ?Bottle Opener,? the 23rd District in far West Texas, which may be the only one of the state?s 32 U.S. House seats that?s in a true swing district.

Nomura cuts ECM, M&A teams as axe falls on Europe: sources

LONDON (Reuters) - Japan's Nomura has cut back teams advising on stock market listings and those covering the healthcare industry as it begins to axe about 100 jobs in its European investment banking division, three people familiar with the situation said.

The bank is slashing $1 billion in costs as rocky markets bite, forcing it to pull back after an aggressive overseas expansion in 2008. As part of that, job cuts were widely expected to hit Europe, the Middle East and Africa hard.

About 100 people will leave the region's investment banking division, one of the people said. That department houses teams that advise on mergers and acquisitions in a variety of sectors, on flotations and on bond issues.

Nomura has around 4,000 staff in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Some jobs have already gone this week, with five people cut in the equity capital markets (ECM) team, and another five in the team advising healthcare companies on corporate finance, the three sources said.

    Nomura declined to comment.

Most of the ECM and healthcare bankers who left were junior, two of the sources said.

Senior bankers have also left this week, however. Guy Douglas, Nomura's co-head of capital markets for acquisition and leveraged finance, has gone, Reuters LPC reported earlier on Friday.

The bank is cutting in Dubai too, while regions outside EMEA have not been immune either. Nomura's head of debt capital markets and debt syndicate for Asia, excluding Japan, has left, IFR reported on Friday.

The Japanese bank is expected to target other departments too, such as equities trading, where it is focusing its efforts on one trading platform instead of two.

The cost cuts are Nomura's second big restructuring in a year, and are primarily targeted at its loss-making overseas operations.

The bank has struggled to make its international expansion work ever since it snapped up the Asian and European units of the now defunct Lehman Brothers in 2008, though many rival investment banks are also slashing jobs as weak markets and stalling deals hurt revenues.

Notes and stories from Galilee, Israel - African Business Review

    GALILEE, Israel, Sept. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- ?http://notesfromgalilee.wordpress.com

I'm?an Israeli-American who'd lived in Los Angeles many, many years.? In 2011 I returned to Northern Israel (Galilee) with my wife and twin teen-age daughters.? I am of two lands, of two cultures and I'm reporting from my new-old country.? While I lived and worked in America, I wrote several novels and short-stories.? Now I write of my experiences in Israel, particularly from Galilee where Jews and Arabs dwelled for centuries.

    (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120921/CG79039)

?Galilee, Israel is short on geography, long on history.?? Here they talk in millennia and centuries, not decades.

?You can't kick a rock around here without tripping over a ruin, fragments of scripture, a marble column. Every hill, outcrop, ravine, valley, mountain, rift, river, stream, creek, wadi, has a name whose origin is prehistoric, biblical. Jews call one settlement by one name, the Moslems by another and they both claim the high road. Throw in the Christians (not to the lions, please), with all their splinter groups (Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Greek Catholic, Russian Orthodox, Protestants, Assyrians, Armenians, to name a few) and you've gone one wild Hannuka, Christmas, Ramadan party.

What does Galilee mean? It depends who you ask. To Christians it's where Jesus performed miracles, practiced his ministry. To Moslems, it's where they've lived for centuries, where they drove away the Crusader armies. To religious and observant Jews, it's the battle of Devorah against the armies of Sisra, it's where the Tribes of Naftali, Dan, and Asher lived, it's where the scholars and sages in Tiberias studied, it's the center of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism, in Zefat. To secular, urban Jews from Tel-Aviv -- a two-hour drive -- the Galilee evokes vineyards, hills, valleys, hikes, a week-end destination for yuppies with money to burn at roadside Zimmers (Bed & Breakfast, in German), or skiing down the snowy Mt. Hermon instead of the Swiss Alps. To them it's also a place of kibbutzim, moshavim (collective farms), industrial parks, and failing towns which had absorbed immigrants in the 50s.

The Druze, who are Arab but draw influences not only from the three religions but also from Greek philosophy and Hinduism, the Galilee is a sacred place. To the Circassians, fair-skinned and blue-eyed, who were driven from the shores of the Black Sea by the Russians, and who'd become expert horsemen and warriors under the Ottoman empire, and who'd converted from Christianity to Islam, the Galilee is their last refuge from persecution. And I have yet to throw into the mix the Bedouin tribes, the nomads.

?We're all living side by side but not with each other.? Jews read the Hebrew road signs, Arabs read the Arabic, foreigners read the English.? There are three languages on bags of potato chips, three languages on milk cartons, three religions at every turn.? And here's the rub.? The man (son of God), who preached of brotherly love, brought about such friction after his death (resurrection), that we mortals are still dealing with it today.? Or is it all a master plan to see if we can survive together on this "rocky" terrain?

The stories told of Galilee are humorous, something biting, but always draw on several points of view.

??Take a look at my reporting and stories at the blog below:
