For many, job loss would mean missing bills

Mark Lennihan / AP

People wait to talk with potential employers at a job fair in New York last December.

By Allison Linn

The sudden loss of a job has become, if not commonplace over the last years, at least not very surprising.

And yet, many Americans remain unprepared for not having an income. A new survey from Country Financial finds that one-third of Americans would immediately fall behind on their bills if they lost a job and were left with no income.

That?s virtually the same result that Country Financial got the last time they asked the same question, in July of 2009.

The good news: About one-quarter of Americans are well-prepared for a job loss. The January survey found that 24 percent of respondents could weather five months without an income. That?s also virtually the same percentage as in July of 2009.

Country Financial conducts the survey of 3,000 people bi-monthly.

Although the economy is consistently adding more jobs than it is shedding, some workers continue to be let go. For example, Kraft Foods said this week that it would cut 1,600 jobs as it prepares to split its business in two.

If you do lose a job, the market remains tough. The median time it takes to find a new job is 21 weeks, or about five months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There are currently about 13 million unemployed Americans who are looking for work, and the unemployment rate is at 8.5 percent.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent: The MegaUpload Closure Leaves Users Unable To Access Their Files

shutterstock_79185400Alright, Feds. You've had your fun. You've arrested some people you deem bad and seized their Mercedes-Benz collection. Great. So how about turning MegaUpload back on for a quick minute? The United States Department of Justice seized and shut down MegaUpload yesterday in an impressive (and scary) show of force. The site is effectively nuked, which is bad news bears for its zillions of users. Sure, the site was infamous for hosting illegal files, but it was also one of the best ways to share large files online. The closure leaves users unable to access their files. Those using MegaUpload for legitimate reasons are the real victims.

Facebook's 'Like' button gets new friends

Wetpaint Entertainment

Facebook's "Like" button has become an integral part of online life, connecting sites around the web back to the social network, helping people send quick signals to their friends ? and?filling up Facebook?s databases?with valuable information about the activities and preference of its users,?whether or not those users happen to be aware of that fact.

But the "Like" button is pretty simplistic. It?s a binary measurement of a multifaceted world. Facebook knows this, and it has been working with third-party services and applications to add new verbs to the mix as part of an expansion of?its "Open Graph"?initiative.

It started a while back, most noticeably through the integration of apps such as music service Spotify into Facebook ? showing Facebook users what their friends are listening to at any given moment, for example. Other examples include the ability for Facebook users to indicate that they?re watching a particular show or cooking a particular dish.

Now,?a new wave of Facebook apps?is taking it to a whole new level.

Case in point:?Wetpaint Entertainment, a television fan site that is integrating with the Facebook Timeline to let people click to say LOVE!, BOO!, TMI, HOT!, OMG, EWW!, LOL!, or MEH, in the same way that they?ve said "Like" in the past. The site, operated by Seattle-based startup Wetpaint, rolled out the new buttons today.

When someone clicks on one of the new buttons, it shows up in their Facebook Timeline, visible to their friends, just as with the Like button. I?ve been testing the buttons out this morning, which explains why my Facebook friends have seen me "OMG!"?Shannon Magrane?s audition on American Idol, among other things. (Seriously, I can?t believe Steven Tyler said that to her dad.)

Here's my question: Is this too much? I can understand moving beyond the "Like" button, but it seems from the outside that Facebook has essentially given free rein to third-party developers to come up with any verb that they want. With all these new variations, it feels like the pure power of the ?Like? is at risk of being diluted.

Then again, maybe I?m too much of a Facebook traditionalist.

Until we get on board with the new buttons, you'll have to let us know whether you LOVE, BOO, or MEH this new trend manually, in the comments.

Ohio taking death penalty case to US Supreme Court (AP)

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Ohio's governor and attorney general said Sunday the state is asking the U.S. Supreme Court for a ruling that Ohio's protocol for carrying out the death penalty is constitutional.

Gov. John Kasich and Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement that the state wants the high court to reverse a federal appeals court decision to delay the Wednesday execution of Charles Lorraine.

Lorraine was condemned to death in the 1986 slaying of an elderly Trumbull County couple. But the federal appeals court said Friday his execution should be delayed to review changes Ohio has made in carrying out the death penalty.

Lorraine argued that Ohio broke its promise to adhere strictly to its execution procedures. But the state said that deviations from the procedures during the last execution were minor and that an inmate's rights would not be violated by changes, such as which official announces the start and finish times of an injection.

"Attorney General Mike DeWine and I agree that Ohio's administration of capital punishment is constitutional and we have asked the Supreme Court of the United States to affirm that," the governor said in the statement.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling supported an earlier decision by U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Frost, who criticized the state for deviating from policy when an inmate was executed in November.

After the appeals court ruling, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins sent a letter urging the two state officials to appeal. Watkins argued the federal courts have wrongly interfered with Ohio executions.

Records show Lorraine, 45, repeatedly stabbed 77-year-old Raymond Montgomery and his bedridden wife, 80-year-old Doris Montgomery, before burglarizing their Trumbull County home.

Lorraine's attorney, Allen L. Bohnert, has said the case is not about the crimes for which Lorraine was convicted and sentenced, but about the state's liability to apply its law equally.

Islamist set to be Egypt's new parliament speaker (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Leading Egyptian political parties will back a senior figure in the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) for the assembly's speaker with another Islamist group and a liberal party taking the deputy posts, an FJP official said on Monday.

The FJP, which secured the biggest bloc in a parliamentary election, is proposing its Secretary-General Mohamed al-Katatni for speaker, the head of the Brotherhood's party Mohamed Morsi said after parties met.

Under the agreement reached between the main parties which included liberal and Islamists groups, the two deputy speaker posts would go to the Islamist al-Nour party, runners up in the vote, and the liberal Wafd party, one of the next biggest groups.

Full results have yet to be announced because votes in some areas are going to be run again, but the broad result of the staggered election that began in November is already clear. Parliament gathers for its first session on January 23.
