Prop 3 approval extends low-interest student loans | The Rambler

Students at Texas Wesleyan and in colleges statewide will continue to benefit from the Hinson-Hazelwood College Student Loan Program.

Proposition 3, approved last November, authorized the issuance of general obligation bonds to finance the Hinson-Hazelwood program.
?
According to ballotpedia.org, the program provides low-interest loans to students who are not able to finance the full cost of college through other sources.
?
With tuition on the rise, students are often in need of any aid they may qualify for. Bradden Van Noy, president of the Student Government Association, said Proposition 3 will have lasting effects.
?
?The passing of Proposition 3 will affect students here at Wesleyan a great deal,? Van Noy said. ?I am confident that enrollment here at Wesleyan would have taken a significant hit if the funds from Proposition 3 were not available.?
?
Garry Jones, secretary for the SGA, said the passage of Proposition 3 will benefit Wesleyan students even more so than other schools.
?
?Before the passage of Prop 3, Wesleyan students were some of the most benefited from the loan program, and with the expansion of the student loan program, Wesleyan students will continue to reap from its benefits,? Jones said.
?
Van Noy said a large majority of students at Wesleyan and across Texas depend on financial aid.
?
?Our students don?t exactly come to Texas Wesleyan because it is the cheapest university in the area,? Van Noy said. ?We take on significant financial burden in order to be able to get the unique education that is offered here.?
?
Others do not agree with the concepts surrounding student loans.
?
Misty Rushing, anesthesia nursing alumna at Wesleyan, said nearly all college students will require money for college, regardless if they think the system is corrupt.
?
?Some people believe that the system is corrupt and rigged to keep Americans indebted to the federal government through a system of borrowing and oftentimes predatory lending with little consumer protections,? Rushing said. ?We are seeing more college graduates unable to find work, and they are having to default on their loans.?
?
Rushing said collection agencies and increasing interest rates on defaulted loans create more profit incentives to lenders than assisting borrowers with repayment.
?
The Hinson-Hazelwood program offers students low interest rates; and with the need for extra funds to pay tuition, several current students still believe financial aid is essential.
?
?I know that without financial aid I would not be at Wesleyan, nor would the majority of our students,? Jones said. ?Although for a small private university Wesleyan is affordable, the fact is that Texas Wesleyan is still not cheap.?
?
Student loans and other financial aid often also allow students to afford the higher educations they seek.
?
?Loans and federal aid allow students to attend college when they otherwise may not have the opportunity,? Jones said. ?I am glad that Prop 3 passed so that students in Texas can continue to afford to attend college and get ahead in today?s marketplace.?

Is your toilet paper wiping out forests used by tigers, elephants, orangutans?and other wildlife? In a report Wednesday, the World Wildlife Fund?alleged that?a major paper supplier from Indonesia is clearcutting habitat there and targeted a major U.S. distributor to stop buying from that source.
"We found that two brands sold in the United States ? Paseo and Livi ? are made with paper from Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), which is responsible for more forest destruction in Sumatra than any other single company," the World Wildlife Fund report stated. "Paseo is a retail brand of toilet paper, paper towels, napkins and facial tissue, and it is now the fastest growing brand of toilet paper in the United States, according to its marketer."
The distributor, Oasis Brands,?didn?t responded directly to the accusation, but defended APP while saying it wants to work with grocery chains to set up a system of monitoring the sustainability of its tissue products.
"Everyone wants the reassurance that the products they buy from Indonesia meet internationally recognized certification standards and are not damaging the precious natural resources of that country," Oasis Brands CEO Philip Rundle said in a letter to the industry.
"Continuous, rigorous auditing has proven APP products are made from sustainable sources and meet well-established sustainability standards," he added. "Now we would like the US grocery industry to see the results of such an audit for themselves. We are confident that APP will meet the expectations of US grocers."
WWF questioned?Oasis' defense of the pulp and paper producer.?"APP?s forest management operations in Indonesia are not certified as sustainable by any credible third party, "WWF forest expert Linda Kramme told msnbc.com. "There are responsible pulp and paper companies in the US, in Indonesia, and the world over, which employ people and make a profit ? all without destroying rain forests."

WWF said an APP supplier was draining this peat forest inside a tiger sanctuary in Riau, Indonesia.
The group also noted that in recent months eight large retailers?-- identified as?BI-LO, Brookshire Grocery Company, Delhaize Group, Harris Teeter, Kmart, Kroger, SUPERVALU and Weis Markets?-- had decided to stop carrying APP tissue products.
"We applaud each of these companies? decision to remove these products from their stores," Jan Vertefeuille, head of WWF?s tiger campaign, said in a statement.

Here are some highlights:
Her parenting philosophy: ?I kind of feel I?ve done my job right if they?re mildly embarrassed by me.?
Her discipline methods: ?[Husband Mark Consuelos is] more apt to dole out discipline, but my punishments are real. I?ll take away my son?s iPod if he?s fresh. [If the kids don't keep their grades up,] we don?t let them watch TV during the week anyway, but [if we need to punish them], we?ll take that away on the weekends. [Or] we?ll take [the computer away] ? which is like taking oxygen out of my daughter?s lungs.?
On the difference between raising boys and girls: ?For one thing, parent-teacher conferences are like night-and-day experiences. We sometimes say Lola?s parent-teacher conferences are what get us through the boys?.?
On the one time she truly ?lost it?:?
?Not too long ago I came home late, I hadn?t had dinner, and?a riot broke out ? they got out of bed, Lola and Joaquin were hitting each other and screaming?and then Lola wanted me to read her a story, and Joaquin said, ?If you read her a story, you have to read me a story!? And Michael?s like, ?Mom, can I order a movie on iTunes?? I just broke down crying in front of them, which I had never done before.?
On having a fourth child: ?That?s the one constant discussion in our house. The kids are always asking, ?When are you going to have another baby?? I don?t want to gild the lily. We?ve been so lucky?.I?m 41, and they start giving you the ?advanced maternal age? warning at 35, so it scares me. I think about adopting. There are so many children who need homes. Then again, I think about the best-case scenario ? not just for us, but for my children. I want to make sure my preteen daughter isn?t taking care of a newborn because I?ve got to take Michael to a track meet.?
The secret she keeps from her oldest: ?This year, he said, ?I?m the only kid at school who gets dropped off and whose mother picks him up. I don?t want that anymore.? I said, ?Fine.? Now when the bus comes, I wait on the opposite corner, across the street, and I watch him walk home with his friends. He doesn?t know I?m there. He?s never seen me.?
On couple time: ?After the kids go to bed, we have a couple of hours when it?s just us. We either talk about our day or watch one of our favorite TV shows. Otherwise, there?d be no time. We used to go away, just the two of us, for two or three days to celebrate our anniversary every year. I can?t remember the last time I did that.?
Her biggest ?mom-brain? moment: ?Taking my kids to the Bronx Zoo, I put the purse on the hood of my car and I drove off; didn?t realize it till I had to pay to get in.?
