Usually it takes three martinis and a long night to get people to ruminate about a brokered convention, but it's happening. Under this scenario, a white-knight candidate arrives either late in the nominating process or in Tampa. Of course, this person does not yet exist.?Jeb Bush, Mitch Daniels, and Chris Christie have all said they're not interested. Oh sure, they could be convinced to enter the race, but that doesn't change the logic that kept them from running in the first place. The owner of the?funeral home that?handled Whitney Houston's funeral is vehemently denying that her staff was responsible for the?National Enquirer's photograph of the singer in her casket.
?"I'm going to answer you as the publicist told me to answer you: We have no comment. But it was not the funeral home," Carolyn Whigham told the Los Angeles Times. "Whitney was a personal friend to me and my family. We would not do that."
She also told the newspaper, "I am very angry, very upset, just like the family, just like the fans."
She also said that Houston's family would release a statement to the media shortly.
Whigham owns the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, N.J., where Houston's private funeral service was held Feb. 18. Earlier, she had told the U.K.'s Daily Mail that the Houston family had asked her not to comment.
The Enquirer's photo, showing a woman who appears to be Houston lying in a?casket with her?nickname, "Nippy," written on its silk lining,?provoked widespread outrage. It appears to have been taken in a?viewing room prepared to receive guests for Houston's service.?While the photo has not been officially confirmed to be Houston, neither Whigham nor anyone from the Houston family has?said that it was fraudulent.
It "seems doubtful" the photo was leaked by a family member, the Times reports, citing the Houston family's attempts to keep the media away from the service.?Houston's funeral was invitation-only to preserve privacy, although an?Associated Press camera was allowed to film the service, which was streamed live online.
Focus does seem to be shifting from Houston's death to the press coverage of her death, especially as it relates to how information is leaking out.? Radar Online is reporting?that hotel staffers at the Beverly Hills Hilton, where Houston died on Feb. 11,?have been fired for speaking to the media about the death.
?Hotel employees that talked to the media were fired because they violated hotel policy," Radar Online's anonymous source says. "They weren?t high level employees, but the hotel didn?t want anyone to talk about Whitney?s tragic death.?
There is still no official cause of death given for the late singer. Los Angeles Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter says an autopsy was performed, but that results are being held until toxicology tests have been performed.
While the Beverly Hills police department has said the death is not a criminal case and they are not conducting a homicide investigation, Nancy Grace of HLN has brought up that?angle, saying?"I'd like to know who was around her...and who let her slip, or pushed her, underneath that water."?
Comedian Lewis Black criticized Grace's speculation, saying "she manages to turn the tragic accident into murder mystery dinner theater."
No less than legendary singer Aretha Franklin, Houston's godmother and a 50-year friend of Houston's mother Cissy,?has pleaded for media sanity,?issuing a statement Wednesday saying,?"Cissy does not need ridiculous speculation and neither do I.?

Democrats have an unexpected new foil in their effort to label the GOP as hostile to women: Rick Santorum.
After hammering away for a year at the message that Republicans are indifferent to women?s health and economic well-being, President Barack Obama?s party has been handed a nearly perfect political punching bag in the former Pennsylvania senator, whose down-the-line cultural conservatism is a major selling point in the 2012 primaries.

Santorum has also stood by his opposition to contraception, reiterating his position that it shouldn?t be covered by the national health-care law because it is ?inexpensive.? While the ex-senator doesn?t favor outlawing birth control, he is personally opposed to it.
In another major hit this week, Santorum?s most prominent financial backer, Wyoming financier Foster Friess, joked on television that back in the day, women ? he called them ?gals? ? would practice contraception by holding aspirin ?between their knees.?
The timing of these flare-ups is politically dangerous for Santorum, as Republicans on Capitol Hill this week held an all-male hearing on birth control and the controversy is just starting to fade over the Obama administration?s health-care ruling on contraception and religious groups.
These issues may work in the ex-senator?s favor in the Republican presidential primary. But to longtime Democratic women operatives, Santorum?s rise in the presidential race represents the return of an old rival ? a 1990s-era culture warrior whose political comeback is as shocking as it is inadvertently useful for the Democratic cause.
?He constantly says things that are offensive to women,? said Kim Gandy, former president of the National Organization for Women. ?Regardless of whether Republican women like some of his policies, I think they?re going to be so turned off by his judgmental stand on the independence and essential rights of women that they won?t be able to vote for him.?
?The idea that a man who opposes something as widespread as the use of birth control would even be taken seriously as a candidate, would be shocking to me,? Gandy said. ?He makes Romney look like a liberal by comparison ? but only by comparison. At least Mitt Romney hasn?t said women shouldn?t use birth control.?
Already one of his party?s most ardent abortion rights foes, Santorum, in his 2005 book ?It Takes a Family,? advocated an old-school role for women in the home and accused ?radical feminists? of undermining families by telling women ?professional accomplishments are the key to happiness.? Santorum says his wife authored that section.
Thus far in the presidential race, Santorum hasn?t anchored his campaign message in gender-related issues ? or really, in social issues more generally. He has emphasized his cultural traditionalism as a way of drawing contrasts with Romney, but the main thrust of the Republican?s sales pitch is his adherence to small-government conservatism and his pledge to revive the manufacturing sector of the economy.

I frequently talk to potential clients who tell me they have been conducting a job search for X months without any success, or that they have sent out X number of resumes with virtually no response. When I press for more details, almost invariably, I hear stories about resumes posted in online resume databases and resumes sent in response to ads found on online job boards.
What is wrong with these job search techniques? Well?nothing is fundamentally wrong with them. In fact, they play an important part ? a small part ? in most well-constructed job search plans. However, these are extremely low-payoff job search activities, and if these are the only techniques you are using, the chances are far greater than not that your job search will generate disappointing and slow results.
If you are unhappy with the results of your job search, it is time that you took an objective look at your job search techniques. Are you spending too much of your precious time and energy on low-payoff job search activities while you ignore those that will produce the positive results that you want and deserve?
While the more effective job search activities ? such as networking -usually require people to step out of their comfort zones, the returns generated by your investment of your time and energy will almost always be worth it.
So, if you find yourself stuck in a stalled, ineffective search for your next job, here are some high-impact tips that are almost certain to have a high-payoff on your effort through a faster, more successful job search.
1) Take a hard look at your resume. Like it or not, your resume is your first introduction to most employers, and your only chance to make a good first impression. Effective resumes are highly focused marketing pieces that are strategically written and designed to sell YOU as THE best solution to a potential employer?s needs and problems. Your resume should be written to convey and illustrate your unique value proposition, with succinct ?stories? that differentiate you from your competitors in the job market. Does your resume accomplish these goals? Is it focused effectively? Does it accurately present you in the way that you wish to be presented? If not, it is time to rewrite. 2) Now, take a hard look at your methods. Do the methods you are using in your job search convey professionalism at every step? Is your approach courteous and does it illustrate an understanding of common business protocol? For example, do you always send at least a brief letter of introduction when you send a new contact your resume? I can?t tell you how many times a prospective client tells me he isn?t getting calls on his resume, and when I quiz him he will tell me that he has been sending his resume as an attachment to emails, and then admits that he has not been including an introductory note. In this day and age, when everyone is concerned about viruses and spam, do you honestly believe that a recipient will open an attachment that arrives with a blank email? Of course not! Or?Does the message on your answering machine make you sound like a polished professional or a party animal? Is your email user name a professional-sounding one or a cutesy one? You have tough competition in the job market. Details matter! Courtesy and business protocol matters! Everything you do in your job search should convey an impeccably professional image. My best advice: Apply some basic common sense and remember your manners. Do these two things and you will be fine.
3) Ramp up your networking efforts. Of all of the possible job search methods, networking is the most effective by far, and yet it is the method that the fewest people use. I know that you don?t want to hear this, but no matter how uncomfortable it might be for you, networking is absolutely crucial and is the fastest way to your next position. Remember that when you are networking you are not asking people if they know of an opening or to give you a job, you are just asking for referrals or advice. Would you be upset if someone you knew contacted you to inform you of their job search and asked if you might be able to offer any advice or point her in the right direction? Of course you wouldn?t. In fact, you might even be flattered. This is the same reaction that your personal and professional networking contacts will have. If you don?t have frequent face-to-face contact with your network, the quickest way to jumpstart your search using networking is to send your resume and a brief letter to every single one of your contacts, and then follow up with a phone call a few days later. In most cases, people will be more than happy to help you out. But whether they are able to help you immediately or not, follow up with a brief handwritten thank you card. This is a gesture that will make a lasting positive impression.
4) Do your research; don?t just blindly and indiscriminately send out your resume. Research the geographic and industry areas that interest you and identify the companies and opportunities that seem most promising and intriguing to you. Now research some more. With the vast quantities of information available on the Internet, you really have no excuse not to research thoroughly. Identify the hiring decision-makers and learn all you can about them and their company, their competitors, their challenges, and their future potential. This is a great time to call on your professional network. Who do you know who knows someone who knows some else at the company you are interested in? Once you have an ?in? through a referral, it is time to make sure you are absolutely clear on your value proposition. In what way do you feel you could add value to the company? How would hiring you be beneficial? What is the return on investment that the company could expect if they hired you? Once you have the answers to these questions clear in your mind, it is time to approach the targets.
5) Consider a targeted e-mailing of your resume to headhunter/recruiter firms. But don?t just use one of the cheap broadcast services that send your resume out to some unspecified list of 1000s of supposed recruiters. If you are going to do this, use a high-quality service that uses an up-to-date database of recruiting firms that they can break down and segment based on the firms? specialties. Discovery Communications CEO 'Excited to Grow' OWN This Year ...

NEW YORK - OWN, the cable network joint venture of Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications, is off to a good start this year, and "we are excited to grow this network in 2012," Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav said on his company's earnings conference call on Thursday.
OWN, which struggled in its launch year 2011, established a foundation for Winfrey's presence this year, he said. "The network learned a great deal about its audience, developing a wide array of new content and formats," reiterated in comments to analysts on the call.
?
"Oprah is now fully engaged with her creative leadership team, and OWN is off to a nice start in 2012 with her hit show Oprah's Next Chapter setting viewing records for the network when it premiered," he added. "Oprah will be featured in additional formats throughout the year."?
Our America With Lisa Ling and Sweetie Pies are two of the shows developed last year that are back in 2012, he highlighted.
In a Q&A with analysts, Zaslav reiterated that he and Winfrey both have confidence in the current OWN team, following a slew of executive changes. He didn't comment on a question about whether Discovery would have the right to terminate its venture deal with Winfrey if OWN doesn't improve further or if the partnersmove OWN online. ?We are up for about a year,? he said in a comment similar to previous comments that Discovery was looking at OWN as a longer-term business opportunity.
Asked about OWN's expected profitability in 2012, outgoing CFO Brad Singer said the company doesn't comment on individual networks in terms of profitability.
Zaslav on Thursday also lauded the "significant strides" of kids joint venture network The Hub, in which Hasbro is Discovery's partner. The channel built its audience every quarter last year, with the fourth quarter, which provided the first apples-to-apples comparison since Hub's launch, seeing a 31 percent gain in all-day viewership among kids 2-11. "With a great slate of both new and returning series?it is poised to build its audience in the year ahead," vowed Zaslav.

Eurozone has one foot in recession (AP)
LONDON ? The 17-nation eurozone has one foot in recession, according to official figures showing the economy contracted 0.3 percent in the final three months of 2011 from the previous quarter, a clear sign that Europe's debt crisis has spared no country in the single currency bloc.
The decline was the first since the second quarter of 2009 and followed a meager 0.1 percent increase in the previous three-month period, Eurostat, the EU's statistics agency, said Wednesday.
The figure was slightly better than expected but shows Europe's economy was hit hard when the debt crisis intensified and threatened to spread to big economies, notably Italy. In November, it appeared likely that the eurozone's third-largest economy would need financial rescue like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.
In a desperate bid to save the euro, Europe's governments agreed to tie their economies more closely together and the European Central Bank offered super-cheap long-term loans to struggling banks. The twin response has helped calm market jitters this year, despite the ongoing confusion over Greece's second bailout.
Whether that was enough to avoid a recession ? technically defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction ? remains to be seen.
"It remains conceivable that the euro area might still escape from re-entering technical recession," said James Ashley, senior European economist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent indicators suggest that after contracting in the fourth quarter, the eurozone economy has recovered its poise.
Nevertheless, many individual countries in the eurozone are back in recession ? Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, on top of bailed-out Greece and Portugal.
Europe's deteriorating fortunes stand in stark contrast to the performance of the United States, which has seen economic growth slowly recover over the past year and unemployment begin to fall. In the fourth quarter, the U.S. economy grew by 0.7 percent compared with the third quarter, according to Eurostat.
How the global economy fares this year is likely to depend on how Europe deals with the debt crisis. Many institutes, including the International Monetary Fund, think it's the biggest risk to the global economic outlook.
"With Greece still on the edge of disaster and the fiscal crisis deepening, the eurozone economy faces enormous challenges," said Jennifer McKeown, senior European economist at Capital Economics, who is predicting that the eurozone will contract by 1 percent this year and by an even-worse 2.5 percent next.
The quarterly figures from Eurostat were a little better than most analyst predictions of a 0.4 percent drop, but failed to affect markets, which were focused on the possibility that Greece might finally clinch a new bailout deal.
National figures released before the Eurostat data indicated that buoyant investment levels helped France post an unexpected 0.2 percent gain and Germany a lower-than-anticipated 0.2 percent drop.
For 2011 as a whole, the eurozone economy grew by 1.5 percent, while the 27-nation European Union, which includes non-euro countries such as Britain and Sweden, expanded by 1.6 percent.

"I want to bring this discussion to the table," he said. "It wouldn't be a crime to transport, to move drugs. It would all have to be regulated."
Perez Molina, a former army general who took office last month, didn't give any other details about his proposal, mention specific drugs or say when the next meeting with Central American leaders will be.
He said he will bring the subject up with Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes when Funes visits Monday.
The Guatemalan president said the war on drugs and all the money and technology received from the U.S. has not diminished drug trafficking in the area.
"There was talk of the success of Plan Colombia but all it did was neutralize big cartels," Perez Molina said of a U.S. initiative supporting Colombia's fight against leftist rebels and far-right militias involved in the drug trade.
Perez Molina also blamed drug cartels for rampant violence in Guatemala, which has a homicide rate of 41 murders per 100,000 people.
The president took office pledging to wield an "iron fist" against crime.
Authorities say both the Zetas and the Sinaloa drug cartels are running and processing drugs in Guatemala and may be competing for territory, especially in the province of Peten near the border with Mexico.
