Todd Gates, former professional athlete, is a strength and conditioning coach and the president of M-Core FTS, a gym equipment vendor.? He met with us recently to talk about trends, mistakes, and equipment in the fitness field.
Todd Gates knows fitness.
Todd is a former collegiate and professional athlete. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, and since his playing career ended, he has been a strength and conditioning coach for 11 years and has worked with such prestigious institutions as Boston College, UMass Boston, and Rutgers University, where he invented the training station.
The biggest mistake people make in the gym.
The single biggest mistake Todd sees at the gym is people that workout for too long. People think working out for long periods is good, which just isn?t true.
Most people workout well over an hour, and the body can only handle weight training for at most an hour. After an hour, the the hormone cortisol is released, which breaks down muscle tissue and puts the body in a catabolic state. Less is more and more is less when it comes to spending time lifting weights at the gym.
Even pros have their favorites.
Todd?s favorite piece of equipment at the gym (besides his own) is a platform rack. The platform rack allows exercisers to perform every free weight and bodyweight exercise imaginable. If you come to a gym, that?s where Todd will be training most of the time.
Health and wellness trend.
The health and fitness industry is moving away from machines and going towards functional training. The term functional training is definitely overused.
What is functional? Basically most movements that utilize free weights and mimic movement patterns we use in real life are functional. Functional training doesn?t mean balancing on a bosu ball holding a kettle bell and performing a single leg RDL. A squat is functional, a dead lift is functional, and so is a standing DB military press.
When it comes to fitness, you don?t need machines, although careful use of the right one can benefit your workout. You should also limit your workout and strive for training that works for you instead of following the trends.
