How can my family have fun and grow in faith this summer? : St ...

Summer vacation is coming, which is great news! ?Unfortunately, that means that the Bite-Sized Faith blog will also take a break, but we?ll be back with more practical faith and parenting topics this Fall!

Summer is a time of unlimited opportunity, but it can also mean kids moping around the house with ?nothing to do.? ?To help jumpstart your summer, we?ve compiled a list of five ideas that should not only be quality family fun, but should make sure that summer is the perfect time for your child?s faith to continue to grow.

Family-Faith Summer Ideas

Complete a family road trip and pilgrimage

Take a family trip that will not only be fun, but will also have a spiritual purpose.? Use the car ride to listen to entertaining CDs on spiritual topics, such as Lighthouse Media CDs or the Chronicles of Narnia series on CD.? Here are some local and regional sites that would be fun places for your family to visit.

The Grotto of the Redemption, West Bend, Iowa ? Visit a nationally famous series of nine grottos, each portraying a scene in the life of Christ.

Trinity Heights Sioux City, Iowa ? Walk through beautiful grounds of various reminders of the Catholic faith, including a 33-foot high statue of Jesus!

The Cross in the Woods Shrine, Indian River, Michigan ? This is a longer trek, but you can check off your ?bucket list? that you have visited the world?s largest crucifix.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, Champion, Wisconsin ? Visit a Marian apparition site.

Do service as a family

Make an effort to include service in your summer schedule. ?Even a one-time trip can be life-changing to kids who may not regularly see families and persons in need. ?Help serve a meal to the homeless at?Connection Caf?,?or wake up early and help with the mobile Salvation Army breakfasts. Visit a nursing home and let your children learn the value of listening and respect for the elderly. ?Volunteer as a family with Habitat for Humanity and let teens sense the rewarding feeling from working with their hands for the good of others. ?On the drive home help the children reflect on how service is a great way to show the love of Jesus to those around us.

Spend family time outdoors

Time in nature is a great way to reconnect with both family and God. ?There is something about walking or biking together outside that allows conversation to flow easily and more deeply. ?Romans 1:20 says, ?Ever since the creation of the world, [God?s] invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what He has made.? ?So go for a picnic in a state park, a hike by Saylorville Lake, or star-gazing in your backyard. ?Remind your children about Who made the beauty around them and that He made it for love of them.

Continue to go to Mass (and Reconciliation)

Summer vacation is not a vacation from Mass. When you travel, make sure that you find out ahead of time when and where Mass and reconciliation are offered. The website, MassTimes.org is a great resource. Celebrating Mass in places other than your home parish is a great way to help your children feel that they are part of a universal Church. While there may be slight differences? in music and style at other parishes, it?s a great reminder that Jesus is present everywhere.

Try family adoration

To create a perfect balance to the chaos of summer activities, enjoy Eucharistic Adoration as a family. ?Teaching kids that silence and time away from technology is a gift. ?We grow in silence, and it is much easier to hear God in silence than when we are constantly distracted by noise and activity. ?Fit it into your schedule by going to either St. Augustin or St. Pius X Parish which host perpetual adoration.

Celebrate all the summer Church holidays

To be Catholic should mean that life is a constant party! ?The Catholic Church always has something or someone to celebrate! ?Find creative ways this summer to celebrate Church feast days and take time as a family to find out the meaning of these special days.

One easy way to do this is use your daily food to lead to discussion of the feast days and make the day fun.? Visit Catholic Cuisine, a faith-filled foodie blog with recipes and ideas for celebrating these feast days. ?They even have recipes easily categorized by month, so you can go through the summer months and pick out one or two feast days a month to turn into an educational party!

?

Blessings on you and your families this summer! We hope that you are able to use some of the ideas above to have a fun and faithful summer!

Matched Betting Risks ? And Tips on how to Keep away from Losses ...

Vegas hotels

Vegas hotels

Matched betting is normally deemed to be a risk-free sports betting method. Though the achievement of matched betting doesn?t depend on the outcome of a sports event, you?ll find a number of items that could go wrong with this lucrative betting technique. In this write-up I will describe many of the most typical complications matched bettors have a tendency to expertise.

1. Placing the wrong bet. The achievement of matched betting is according to the capacity to spot bets on both sides on exactly the same choice, therefore generating a risk-free scenario. On the other hand, this can occasionally get confusing due to the fact typically you will discover dozens of comparable betting markets which are all related to exactly the same sports event.

two. Failing to read bookmakers? terms and conditions. Within the globe of matched betting, just about every cost-free bet is distinct. You?ll find some gives that return the free of charge bet stake, some that don?t, some that have a particular rollover requirement, and some that may only be utilised

on specific sports events. Moreover, some totally free bets are only valid for the residents of particular countries or for men and women who use a particular payment strategy. To ensure you qualify for the cost-free bet and that there is going to be no troubles using the rollover requirement, cautiously study the terms and conditions of every promotion.

three. Technical Failure. This may be the worst nightmare of numerous matched bettors. If your laptop or computer, electricity supply or world wide web connection fails following you might have placed among the two bets, you turn into financially exposed and can potentially shed some funds. To stay away from this, ensure that your pc and world-wide-web connection are dependable and attempt to prevent placing bets on the quite last minutes ahead of the marketplace closes. If you can find nonetheless a couple of hours until the kick-off, you might be a lot more most likely to have the ability to solve such a dilemma. Also, usually spot the back bet 1st because it can potentially expense you much less than

the lay bet so long as the odds are above two.0.

4. Altering odds. If the odds alter substantially even though you?ve got placed among the two bets, you?ll be able to also wind up losing some cash. On the other hand, these losses are normally insignificant if compared to the profit you make from the free of charge bet. To decrease the risk of altering odds, make an effort to location the second bet instantly right after the very first 1. Also, location the back bet 1st due to the fact the odds in bookmakers have a tendency to alter in bigger actions than in betting exchanges.

five. Gambling risks. Though this is hardly related to matched betting, some matched bettors really feel tempted to win much more by placing normal bets. Due to the fact matched bettors need to consistently deal with distinct bookmakers, it may be simple to shed discipline and get started betting carelessly. When you believe that this could also take place to you, don?t commence matched betting at all.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Bisexuality, often stigmatized, typically has been lumped with homosexuality in previous public health research. But when Indiana University scientists recently focused on the health issues and behaviors specific to behaviorally bisexual men and women, they found tremendous variety, and that commonly used labels, such as heterosexual and homosexual, can sometimes do more harm than good.

Bisexual, gay, lesbian, queer, men who have sex with men (MSM), women who have sex with women (WSW) -- these are just some of the terms commonly used to characterize sexual partnering and attraction in recent research. Behavioral science researchers have long known that socially constructed sexual identity "labels" (like "gay") are often not always reflective of the diversity and complexity of an individual's sexual behaviors. A study led by Vanessa Schick, assistant research scientist at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at IU Bloomington, found that how women relate to their label could influence their health.

Schick's study involved 2,578 women who reported a history of attraction or sexual encounters with women. The Web-based survey asked about mental, physical and sexual wellness. In the paper "Bidentity: Sexual Behavior/Identity Congruence and Women's Sexual, Physical and Mental Well-Being," Schick reports finding that the women who identified themselves as bisexual or lesbian reported the best health when their sexual identity matched their recent sexual history.

Schick, however, warned against interpreting this as evidence that women should declare a sexual identity that corresponds to their sexual behavior. Instead, she points to the experiences of women who labeled themselves as "queer," a sexual identity that is sometimes endorsed by individuals who want to reject traditional labels that suggest the gender of their sexual partners.

"Unlike the other women in the study, the mental, physical and sexual well-being of queer-identified women was not related to the gender of their recent sexual partners," she said.

"This suggests that, instead of encouraging women to adopt labels that are more descriptive of their behavior, we should be more flexible in the behavioral expectations that we attach to these labels."

For a variety of reasons, men and women often identify openly or just to themselves with a label that is different from their sexual history. One such reason is biphobia, the stigma and discrimination that bisexual individuals experience from both heterosexual and homosexual individuals.

Brian Dodge, associate professor in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and associate director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion, found in his study on sexual health among bisexual men that factors associated with biphobia contributed to feelings of isolation and social stress reported by many of his study participants. Dodge's qualitative study, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health, is based on in-depth interviews with 75 bisexual men from the Indianapolis area, ages 19 to 70, equally divided among Latino participants, non-Latino black participants and non-Latino white participants.

"There have been large quantitative studies that examined the mental health status of men who have sex with both men and women," Dodge said, "but no one has sat down and talked with these men about it. When we did, men were saying explicitly that being bisexual, not having a community to be involved with, not having people they could disclose to, homosexual or heterosexual, was tied to their experiences of adverse mental health."

These are just some of the findings in the special issue of Journal of Bisexuality, published last week. Guest edited by Dodge and Schick, the special issue includes articles that stray from the more typical focus on sexual risk and sexually transmitted infections and covering topics including physical health and wellness, sexual health, and mental health among people whose identities or behaviors indicate bisexuality. Researchers contributing to the issue come from such institutions as Emory University, George Mason University, Columbia University, George Washington University and the IU School of Medicine.

"The issue gives a nice snapshot of how diverse bisexuality is among both men and women," Dodge said.

Here are more findings from Dodge's and Schick's studies:

  • Schick's paper "Variations in the Sexual Repertoires of Bisexually Identified Women in the United States and the United Kingdom" examined the diversity of sexual behavior reported by bisexual women. When looking at their recent sexual experiences, the women were divided almost evenly as having no recent sexual partners, having only a male sexual partner, only a female sexual partner, or both male and female sexual partners. This study involved 710 bisexually identified women, making it one of the largest studies of its kind. "Like all people, bisexual women are living their sexual lives in diverse ways," Schick said. "Some women may choose to have both male and female partners while others may engage in sexual behavior with only men or women. Other bisexually identified women may decide not to have any sexual partners at all. They don't simply fit into one mold. This contradicts the hypersexualized representations of bisexual women that we often find within the media."
  • For both papers in the special issue, Schick and her research team gathered more detailed information than other studies because of the variety of questions asked. Instead of asking whether they used a sex toy, for example, they asked about five different kinds of toys. When they asked about behaviors such as oral sex, they asked who was giving and receiving separately for men and women. Overall, they found that bisexual women tended to engage in parallel behaviors with men and women. In other words, they were similarly as likely to engage in oral sex with a male partner as they were to engage in oral sex with a female partner.
  • In Dodge's study, men were asked to report a wide range of sexual behaviors with both male and female partners based on measures developed for the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, a recent study conducted by the Center for Sexual Health Promotion examining the sexual behaviors and experiences of a nationally representative sample of more than 6,000 individuals in the United States. Such detailed data on the specific oral, vaginal, anal and other sexual behaviors in which these men engage with both male and female partners have been absent from scientific literature. The paper "Sexual Behaviors and Experiences Among Behaviorally Bisexual Men in the Midwestern United States: Implications for Interventions," written by postdoctoral research fellow Omar Martinez of the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at Columbia University, explores the unique sexual behaviors and experiences of bisexual Latino men in the study.
  • In Dodge's paper "Individual and Social Factors Related to Mental Health Concerns Among Bisexual Men in the Midwestern United States," participants reported mental health concerns tied to both individual and social struggles associated with being bisexual, particularly the isolation and lack of support and perceived stigma associated with bisexuality among men. They reported feeling they would automatically receive negative reactions from both homosexual and heterosexual family, friends and other people in their social networks. As a result, participants were not likely to disclose their bisexuality, further increasing their invisibility and isolation.
  • In large part, men in Dodge's study tended to use condoms with male partners for HIV/STI prevention purposes and with female partners for pregnancy prevention purposes. Women were seen as being "safer" in terms of STI transmission risk. In the paper "Subjective Sexual Experiences of Behaviorally Bisexual Men in the Midwestern United States: Sexual Attraction, Sexual Behaviors and Condom Use," authored by IU doctoral candidate Phillip Schnarrs, participants describe the patterns and meanings of their sexual repertoires with both male and female partners.

Dodge said a better understanding of men's sexual behaviors and experiences will lead to more effective health programming for bisexual men and their male and female sexual partners.

"Because the content of most current sexual health programs for gay and bisexual men focus only on their behaviors and experiences with male partners, interventions are urgently needed that are specifically tailored to the wide range of sexual behaviors and experiences which bisexual men share with both male and female partners," he said.

In addition to the special issue of Journal of Bisexuality, scientific papers from Dodge's study have also been recently published in Archives of Sexual Behavior; Sexual Health; Culture, Health & Sexuality; and AIDS Education & Prevention. Schick's studies were conducted in partnership with GaydarGirls. Scientific papers from Schick's study have been published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

The Center for Sexual Health Promotion is part of the Department of Applied Health Science in the School of HPER.

Dennis Rodman Sentenced to Probation, Community Service; Must Pay Even More Child Support

Dennis Rodman's ex is taking him to the HOLE ... or something.

The NBA Hall of Fame member just learned a hard lesson about not paying child support: You have to do so legally or a judge can punish you.

Rodman was just held in contempt for raking up a whopping $808,935 in unpaid child support for his 9- and 10-year-old children, reports say.

He owes an additional $51,441 in unpaid spousal support, too.

Rodman Pic

Rodman was placed on probation for three years and ordered to perform 104 hours of community service as a result of the Orange County judge's ruling.

While he's on probation, Rodman is required to stay current with child support and cover alimony. Given his financial situation, that could be tough.

Dennis claims he's broke, in fact, which doesn't help matters.

According to Dennis, Michelle's six-figure bill is based on a $50,000-a-month order she obtained behind his back - and which he's fought since 2010.

Union Rags breezes at Fair Hill; Ravelo's Boy works for possible Belmont start

One of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I'll Have Another's biggest challengers in the June 9 Belmont Stakes, Union Rags, continued his preparations for the "Test of the Champion" when turning in a five-furlong breeze at Fair Hill Training Center on Thursday in 1:01. The move pleased trainer Michael Matz.

"I was looking for him to go in 1:01," Matz said. "He went nicely. We're happy with him, and he'll have one more work next week."

Exercise rider Peter Brette was at the helm on Thursday, with jockey John Velazquez possible to be aboard Union Rags for his final breeze before the Belmont Stakes, Matz said.

The Belmont will be Union Rags' first race with Velazquez in the saddle as he'll replace Julien Leparoux, who rode Union Rags to a victory in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, a third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and a seventh in the Kentucky Derby.

Union Rags has experience over Big Sandy as the son of Dixie Union captured the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes last season by 5 1/4 lengths.

Korina Stable's Ravelo's Boy sizzled a half-mile in :46 3/5 over a wet-fast track at Calder Thursday morning as the son of Lawyer Ron points for a possible start in the Belmont.

"The Belmont is an option," trainer Manny Azpurua admitted on Thursday. "But we're not ready to say for sure that's where we are running. So far he's doing everything right, and he just flew over the track this morning."

The work, which was two seconds faster than any Thursday Calder move at the distance, was the second published workout in five days for Ravelo's Boy. The colt's Belmont audition will continue in three days when he is scheduled to visit the Calder main track yet again.

"We won't make any official decision until after Sunday," Azpurua said. "(Jockey Alex) Solis is coming down to get on him. They'll go to the track about 7:30 a.m. (EDT) and after that we'll have a better idea where we are going. If it is the Belmont, we'll probably just gallop him up to the race."

Ravelo's Boy hasn't started since a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby on March 10.

"He had some problems after the Tampa race," Azpurua explained. "Nothing too bad, but he needed some time off. And that time off has been good for him."

Ravelo's Boy will be seeking his first stakes win if he goes in the Belmont. The chestnut colt made his black-type debut last July in a listed stakes at Calder, where he ran sixth, and didn't face stakes company again until starting in the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year's Day, where he finished fifth. The sophomore was fourth by only 1 1/4 lengths in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes prior to the Tampa Bay Derby.

Five Sixteen, considered likely for the Belmont, also took to the track to ready for the third jewel of the Triple Crown. The Invasor colt, who would be making his stakes bow in the Belmont, covered five furlongs over Big Sandy's good main track in 1:00 4/5 Thursday.

With Mark Valeski highly doubtful for the Belmont, jockey Rosie Napravnik has picked up the mount on Five Sixteen, who was last seen running fourth in an allowance at Aqueduct on April 18.

FEATURE-Parma mayor becomes Italy's most-watched politician

Sun May 27, 2012 4:00am EDT

* Pizzarotti's win dealt stunning blow to traditional parties

* Hails from comic Beppe Grillo's Five-Star Movement

By Silvia Aloisi

PARMA, Italy, May 27 (Reuters) - Federico Pizzarotti was an unknown, 38-year-old computer technician at a bank until a few weeks ago. Just four days after being elected the mayor of Parma, he has become the most-watched political figure in Italy.

Pizzarotti's leap to fame comes thanks to the grassroots Five-Star Movement, led by comedian Beppe Grillo, which dealt a stunning blow to the parties that have governed Italy for the past two decades in this month's local elections.

Pizzarotti has astonished observers of the Italian political scene by emerging from obscurity to become the first Five-Star candidate to run one of the country's major cities.

The movement, which was created just three years ago and relies extensively on the Internet, has become the country's second most popular party with more than 18 percent support and more than half of Italians would consider voting for it, according to opinion polls.

"Two weeks ago, nobody knew who I was. I feel quite a bit of weight on my shoulders, everybody is watching us," Pizzarotti told Reuters in an interview in a frescoed chamber in Parma's 15th-century town hall.

The success of the protest movement reflects a Europe-wide trend seen from Greece to Germany as the economic crisis has eroded the standing of traditional political parties, blamed for the worst downturn since World War Two.

Like the Northern League 20 years ago, the Five-Star Movement is gaining momentum in Italy's economic heartland in the north. Parma, famous for Parmesan cheese and cured ham, is one of the region's most prosperous cities, and home to almost 190,000 people.

In blue jeans, tennis shoes and a purple sweater, Pizzarotti still seems uncomfortable with media attention, unlike the movement's founder, Grillo, who makes full use of the limelight to blast a scandal-prone elite that has overseen more than a decade of economic stagnation in Italy.

Grillo has also tapped into growing unease with austerity measures and recession by attacking Prime Minister Mario Monti's government of technocrats, which created 24 billion euros ($30 billion) in new taxes this year alone.

Something like an Italian Michael Moore, Grillo's language is irreverent and outlandish. He uses the most vulgar Italian swear words without hesitation, and awards his political rivals colourful nicknames.

Monti is "Rigor Montis," and former Premier Silvio Berlusconi is the "psycho-midget". Italy's established parties are dead, he says, and their leaders are "zombies, vampires, mummies".

The bear-like Grillo, who sports a beard and a mop of tangled white hair, says Italy should dump the euro, devalue the lira, and force foreign banks to accept debt payments - at a loss - in the new currency.

The baby-faced Pizzarotti does not look like Grillo and does not sound like Grillo.

As mayor, his biggest challenge will be managing Parma's 600-million-euro ($750 million) debt, and he will probably need to negotiate with banks Grillo usually derides as the root of the crisis.

"One should not demonise banks. They have a fundamental role in everybody's life," Pizzarotti said.

Pizzarotti chooses his words carefully and does not swear. Instead of attacking rivals, he talks about finding "common ground". He sidesteps the question of the euro, saying he is not an economist.

"We do different jobs," Pizzarotti said of the movement's leader. "He's our loudspeaker, he shakes up people's consciences. He is like a plough that shifts the earth. We are the ones planting the seeds."

"During the campaign, some people told me they didn't like Grillo. I told them that Grillo is not coming to govern here. I am," he said.

FROM MOVEMENT TO PARTY

The change has brought a minor revolution to the familiar cast of middle-aged and elderly men who dominate Italian politics but not everyone is convinced.

"I am puzzled. Parma has a lot of problems. It's good to see all these new, clean faces but you need experienced people to run a city," said bar owner Maria Enrica Galli.

Grillo refuses to call the movement a party, and bans his candidates from going on TV talk shows. The Internet, his blog and social networks are the movement's main means of communication.

It accepts no public campaign financing, unlike the millions of euros pocketed by the established parties every year, funding itself instead from the proceeds of Grillo's stand up shows, and sales of books, videos and T shirts. Pizzarotti spent just over 6,000 euros ($7,500) on his entire campaign.

But with national elections looming early next year and Italy still dangerously enmeshed in the euro zone crisis, the Five Star Movement will come under increasing scrutiny as it seeks to convert its local success to the national stage.

"Grillo and his people have a big job ahead, because a grassroots movement is one thing, but it's quite another thing to organise a real party," said James Walston, a political analyst at the American University in Rome.

"Where there is the smell of power, all sorts of people come out of the woodwork and they will have to work very carefully to maintain their purity," he said.

What is clear is that the thirty-somethings who make up the political bloc have a lot to learn.

In fact, Pizzarotti and his 19 council members are taking a crash course on administrative law from local professors, starting on Thursday, and he has put up an ad on Grillo's blog seeking an experienced administrator.

"We're looking for a person with experience managing the mechanics of city government to be director general as soon as possible. No criminal record, not tied to traditional parties, with proven competence," the ad read, inviting email resumes.

Even handling the time demands of his new job is a challenge for Pizzarotti. As he spoke in the interview, his wife Cinzia kept interrupting.

"We're running late. We've got loads to do. You need to learn to manage your time," she said.
